In this annual report, you will find the outcome of your efforts. YOU MADE A DIFFERENCE! Each month, WINGS receives approximately 200 calls from women who are suffering abuse. The phenomenal staff and volunteers at WINGS respond to each call with compassion and concern for the present and future safety of each person. The end goal is to assist families in becoming self-sufficient and healthy. Without your support, WINGS could not hire the staff and respond to these calls for help. Thank you for making a difference. WHAT YOUR GENEROSITY DID! Last year 136 women and 191 children received 32,906 nights of emergency and transitional shelter as well as comprehensive services such as therapy, financial counseling, career services, children's services, mentoring and more. It was the community support that made this possible. Thank you for your generosity. WHAT ABOUT THE CHILDREN? Too many children are growing up believing violence is common and acceptable. When a mother is abused, her children see it, hear it, and sense it and become enveloped with confusion, stress and fear. WINGS helps children cope with the trauma and to heal. With the support of the community, the cycle of violence can end. Thank you for caring about the children. We honor all of you for helping us to make this mission a reality and we would like to express sincere gratitude to two very special couples in the community. John and Rita Canning and David and Diane Hill both made commitments of $1,000,000 each to WINGS. With this amazing support from the Hills and the Cannings, we established an endowment fund, opened the Safe House to full capacity and will open another resale store to support services and operations. In addition, we give special thanks to John and Mary Jo Boler, Vince and Pat Foglia, and Ed and Jean McCabe. Each of these families provided major gifts to WINGS over the last year and we are truly grateful. This report is dedicated to these generous couples, to all of you, to the staff, volunteers, and women and children of WINGS. We are blessed to have angels here on earth, who assist us in this critical mission of saving lives. Thank you, Rebecca Darr Executive Director Jim Lennon President 2 Portrait of a Resident The night I came to WINGS I was greeted by the staff and it seemed like they were happy that I was there. When they showed me around the shelter it looked like a palace compared to where I came from but it felt like a home. Everything we would need was already provided. That night I put my two young children to sleep in a warm, safe bed and I took a hot shower in a safe bathroom. I wondered if this was what heaven would be like. I didn't have to walk on eggshells or sleep with one eye open. I didn't have to decide between sleeping in my car and sleeping with a man in exchange for a roof over my head. I didn't have to worry about how we would get our next meal. Here, there were no guns, no drugs, no angry men. It was safe and nobody could hurt us. The feeling was so overwhelming that I shed tears that night. Over the next few weeks my children and I began to thrive. We were no longer physically sick from stress. WINGS provided me with counseling and resource referrals. They helped me write a resume, taught me job seeking skills and helped me enroll in college. When I arrived I felt worthless, but the girls that work here treated me with dignity and talked to me like they believed in me. Then I started to believe in myself. I am now enrolled in college, actively seeking work and moving on to the transitional housing program. I will never have to go back to the situation I came from. I will stand on my own two feet and I will not be abused. I am so grateful for the staff, the volunteers and all the people who donate to keep the shelter running because WINGS changed my life and lives of my children. A WINGS Resident Every 9 seconds in the U.S. a woman is beaten 3 and dreams hopes to light f ing Our Mission Giv The mission of WINGS is to provide a continuum of integrated services in an effort to end domestic violence and homelessness one family at a time. History In 1985 a group of concerned individuals conducted a survey to find out what services were being provided to the growing homeless population in the areas of the north and northwest suburbs of Cook County. The survey results indicated that there were no services in place to help women and children in need. This was the fastest growing population of homeless families and the number one cause was domestic violence. Through collaborations with Alexian Brothers and other local community agencies they created WINGS Program, Inc. Since its inception WINGS has grown to 4 homes and 20 apartments. We have assisted women affected by domestic violence and homelessness through a comprehensive program that incorporates emergency and long-term housing with crucial supportive services such as life-skills management, counseling, career development, and financial management. All of these services ensure a successful transition into self-sufficiency, emotional health, and financial independence. Major milestones in WINGS history are shown below. Through the addition of the Safe House, homes and apartments, WINGS has added the capacity to serve more women and children each year. The resale stores have served as the primary source of revenue in expanding the capacity. Safe House Play Room 4 Our Philosophy We believe that everyone has the potential and strength to overcome difficult life circumstances and to accomplish goals that will lead to an enhanced quality of life. WINGS is committed to treating each woman and child in a respectful and compassionate manner while valuing the unique qualities and needs of each family. One of the Bedrooms at the Safe House Services Shared Services - These services are available to women & children in Transitional Housing and the Safe House: Children & Family Services; Career Services; Clinical Services. Additional Support Services - Project Lifeline; Graduate Follow-up; Housing Solution Assistance; Counseling Services; Hospital Advocacy; Suburban Latina Outreach. Transitional Housing - Wings Transitional Housing provides single women and women with children a safe and supportive environment to overcome the crisis that led to their situation. Highly trained WINGS staff members help women to: assess strengths, develop a plan, improve life skills, increase income, reduce debt, refine parenting skills, learn crisis management and increase conflict resolution skills. Safe House - WINGS 15,000 square foot Safe House provides safe, immediate housing to 45 women and children each night. Residents have access to the following services: legal advocacy, links to medical care, counseling, community referrals and transitional living options.
