                                                LOVE

Do you know that the best time to
know yourself is when you are in
                              love? You discover feelings you
never knew you had: the heights of
                              jealousy, passion, anger, and
                              affection.

It’s up to you to be master or slave
to them. Committing into a relationship entails a lot of hard
work to keep it because love is an act of the will, to live for
another, to give oneself to meet the needs of another. Opening
up your heart means making room for love, patience,
understanding, and sacrifice.

Loving a person is like holding sand in your hand. Held loosely,
with an open hand, the sand remains where it is.

                                8
                         Valentine Inspirations

The minute you close your hand and squeeze tightly to hold on,
the sand trickles through your fingers. You may hold on to some
of it, but most will be spilled.

Loving a person is like that. Held loosely, with respect and freedom
for the other person, it is likely to remain intact. But hold too
tightly, too possessively, and the relationship slips away and is
lost. You never lose by loving. You always lose by holding back.

Destiny is not a matter of chance; it is a matter of choice. It is not
a something to be waited for; it is something to be achieved.

               IF I KNEW

If I knew this would be the last time
that I’d see you fall asleep,
I would tuck you in more tightly
and pray the Lord your soul to keep.

If I knew this would be the last time
that I’d see you walk out the door,
I would give you a hug and kiss
and call you back for more.

If I knew this would be the last time
I’d hear your voice lifted up in praise,
I would video tape each action and word
so I could play them back day after day.

If I knew this would be the last time,
I could spare an extra minute
to stop and say “I love you,”
instead of assuming you would know I do.

                    13
           Valentine Inspirations

If I knew this would be the last time
I would be there to share your day,
well I’m sure you’ll have so many more
so I can let just this one slip away.

  For surely there’s always tomorrow
to make up for an oversight,
and we always get a second chance
    to make everything just right.

There will always be another day
           to say “I love you,”
  and certainly there’s another chance
to say our “Anything I can do?”

But just in case I might be wrong
and today is all I get,
I’d like to say how much I love you
and I hope we never forget.

Tomorrow is not promised to anyone,
       young or old alike,

                   14
             Valentine Inspirations

and today may be the last chance
you get to hold your loved one tight.

So if you’re waiting for tomorrow
           why not do it today?
      For if tomorrow never comes,
        you’ll surely regret the day.

That you didn’t take that extra time
for a smile, a hug, or a kiss,
and you were too busy to grant someone
what turned out to be their last wish.

So hold your loved ones close today
          and whisper in their ear,
tell them how much you love them
and that you’ll always hold them dear.

Take time to say “I’m sorry,”
“Forgive me,” “Thank you,” and “It’s okay,”
       and if tomorrow never comes
you’ll have no regrets about today.

                            STATEMENT OF LOVE

                    1. Kiss on the hand . . . I adore you.
                    2. Kiss on the cheek . . . I just want
                         to be your friend.
                    3. Kiss on the neck . . . I want you.
                    4. Kiss on the ears . . . I am just
                         playing.
                    5. Kiss on the lips . . . I love you.
                    6. Kiss anywhere else . . . now,
                         let’s not get carried away.

                KISSING ADVICE

1. Girls: If any guy gets fresh with you, slap him.
     2. Guys: If any girl slaps you, kiss her.

          KISSING COMMANDMENTS

1. Thou shall not kiss too hard.
2. Thou shall not ask for a kiss,
just give one or take one.
3. Thou shall kiss at every opportunity.

    KISSING EXERCISE
     A peach is a peach
and a plum is a plum,
    but a kiss isn’t a kiss
   without some tongue.

  So open up your mouth
    and close your eyes,
   then give your tongue
       some exercise!

                       ABSENT HEARTS

Separated lovers cheat absence by a thousand fancies, which
have their own reality. They are prevented from seeing one
another and they cannot write. Nevertheless they find countless
mysterious ways of corresponding, by sending each other the
song of birds, the scent of flowers, the laughter of children,
the light of the sun, the sighing of the wind, and the
gleam of the stars . . . all the beauties of creation.

       GARDEN FOR PASSION

        Through the garden path
       on chiseled stones bare feet
        on the cool damp ground
past the flower beds of dew drops
      to the waterfall of heartbreak
she lingers in the torn, tattered dreams
     falls, autumn’s forgiving moon
     sending the glow of tenderness
      touching a fragile crystal tear
planted on a rose petal cheek
          planted by a lover’s tiff
  moonbeams soften, lover’s wounds
            memories reflecting
the beauty of a tender kiss
          bluebirds softly singing
           in the forget-me-nots
as the gentle breeze through the trees
           whispers he’s coming.

                           THE ROSE

The man, sweeping the temple paused for a moment. He
looked at the flowers lying about in disorder. “What
waste,” he said to himself. Those roses had adorned the
pulpit at a wedding an hour before. Now, all was over,
and they were waiting to be discarded.

The attendant, leaning on his sweeper, was lost in
thought, when he suddenly heard a strange sound. One
of the roses replied to him. “Do you call this a waste?”
the flower protested. “What is life anyway, yours or mine,
but a means of service? My mission was to create some
fragrance and beauty, and when I have fulfilled it, my
life has not been wasted.”

“And what greater privilege is there than to adorn a bride’s way to
her beloved, what greater privilege than to help glorify the
moment when a bride and groom seal their faith in each other by
entering the covenant of marriage?”

                                27
                       Valentine Inspirations

The little flower paused for a moment to watch the man’s
face, and then continued her discourse. “Roses are like
people. They live in deeds, not in time. My glory was but
for a brief hour, but you should have seen the joy in the
bride’s eye.”

“I like to believe that I had something to do with it, by creating
a suitable setting for the moment of her supreme happiness.
So, don’t grieve for me. My life has been worthwhile.”

                 THE SMELL OF FRESH GRASS

How tranquil it was, lying in the freshly cut jade grass. The aroma
of wet grass was enough to take Amber back to when she was
four. Spread out in that grass, she gazed into the soft, blue heavens.
She and her father would make clouds into animals, and her
father would always say they looked like elephants.

Every time she thinks of her early childhood summers, she
remembers blue skies, clear water and green, green grass. Lately,
Amber had been thinking a lot about her backyard and those
summers she spent with her dad.

Amber’s father had died, August 24, 1990, when she was five
years old. He’d been diagnosed with cancer that summer but
kept it a secret from Amber, not wanting to ruin their last few
weeks together. She’d missed him a lot lately. Even though she
was so young when he died, she remembered everything about
him. His big smile, tan complexion, his comforting laughter.
She loved every second of the days she spent with him.

Amber sat down at her mother’s desk. Needing a pencil sharpener,
she fumbled through the old oak drawers. She came across a
ragged book. Her hand trembled as she felt the leather cover. She
took a deep breath as she opened it and began to read.

July 26, 1990: I still haven’t broken the news to my little angel.
I know I will miss her so much. I pray to the Lord every day to
keep her strong and beautiful, and I know I will watch over her
when I no longer exist in this world. I will be waiting for the day
she comes to play with me up in heaven.

Amber put the book down. She did not need to read any more.
She was already sobbing quietly, partly out of sadness, partly out
of happiness, but mostly because four small blades of dried grass
fell out of the book and into her hands.

LOVE THE SIMPLE PLEASURES OF LIFE

Approach something, anything, with your full
attention and an open mind, and you will find
pleasure and complexity in it.

A garden flower, a cloud-filled sky, a bowl of
fruit, the setting sun, a mountain stream, the
rush of the wind.

All of such things can lead to an appreciation
of the beauty and wonder of nature.

Those who derive the most from life are those who
look for the wonder in even the smallest things.

       DON’T DANCE SO FAST

       Have you ever watched kids
         On a merry-go-round?
         Or listened to the rain
        Slapping on the ground?

Ever followed a butterfly’s erratic flight?
Or gazed at the sun into the fading night?
You better slow down, don’t dance so fast,
Time is short, the music won’t last.

         When the day is done
Do you lie in your bed,
      With the next hundred chores
      Running through your head?

          Ever told your child,
          We’ll do it tomorrow?
           And in your haste,
          Not seen her sorrow?

     Ever lost touch,
Let a good friendship die?
Cause you never had time
  To call and say “Hi”?

When you worry and hurry
   throughout your day,
It is like an unopened gift
        Thrown away.

     Life is not a race.
    Do take it slower,
      Hear the music
  Before the song is over.

              TO READ WHEN YOU’RE ALONE

I was 13-years-old. My family had moved to California from
Florida a year before. I hit adolescence with a vengeance. I was
rebellious, with little regard for anything my parents had to say.
Like so many teenagers, I struggled with everything that didn’t
agree with my picture of the world. I rejected any overt offering
of love.

One night, after a particularly difficult day, I stormed into my
room and slammed the door. As I lay down on the bed, my
hands slipped under the pillow. There was an envelope. I pulled
it out and on the envelope it said, “To read when you’re alone.”

Since I was alone, I opened it. It said: “Mike, I know life is hard
right now, I know you are frustrated and I know we don’t do
everything right. I also know that I love you completely and
nothing will ever change that. I am here for you if you ever need
to talk, and if you don’t, that’s okay. Just know that no matter
where you go or what you do in your life, I will always love you

                                41

and be proud that you are my son. I’m here for you and I love
you – that will never change. Love, Mom.”

That was the first of several “To read when you’re alone” letters.
They were never mentioned until I was an adult. Today I travel
the world helping people. I was teaching a seminar when a lady
came up to me and shared the difficulty she was having with her
son. I told her of my mom’s undying love and about the “To
read when you’re alone” letters. Several weeks later, I got a card
that said she had written her first letter and left it for her son.

That night as I went to bed, I put my hands under my pillow
and remembered the relief I felt every time I got a letter. In the
midst of my turbulent teen years, the letters were the calm
assurance that I could be loved in spite of me, not because of me.
Just before I fell asleep I thanked God that my mom knew what
I, an angry teenager, needed.

               WEALTH, SUCCESS AND LOVE

A woman came out of her house and saw three old men with
long white beards sitting in her front yard. She did not recognize
them. She said, “I don’t think I know you, but you must be
hungry. Please come in and have something to eat.”

“Is the man of the house home?” they asked. “No,” she said,
“he’s out.” “Then we cannot come in just yet,” they replied.

In the evening when her husband came home, she told him what
had happened. “Please tell them I am home and invite them in.”
So the woman invited the men in. “We do not go into a house
together,” they replied. “Why is that?” she wanted to know.

One of the old men explained: “His name is Wealth,” he said
pointing to one of his friends, and said pointing to another, “he
is Success, and I am Love.” He added, “Now go in and discuss
with your husband which one of us you want in your home.”

The woman went in and told her husband what was said. He
was overjoyed. “How wonderful,” he said, “let us invite Wealth.

                               45

Let him come and fill our home with wealth.” His wife disagreed.
“My dear, why don’t we invite Success?”

Their daughter-in-law was listening from the other corner of the
house. She jumped in with her own suggestion: “Would it not
be better to invite Love? Our home will then be filled with love.”
“Let us take our daughter-in-law’s advice,” said the husband to
his wife. “Please go out and invite Love to be our guest.”

The woman went out and asked the three old men, “Which one
of you is Love? Please come in and be our guest.” Love got up
and started walking toward the house. The other two also got up
and followed him.

Surprised, the lady asked Wealth and Success: “I only invited
Love, why are you coming in?” The old men replied: “If you had
invited Wealth or Success, the other two of us would’ve stayed
outside, but since you invited Love, wherever he goes, we go.
Wherever there is Love, there is also Wealth and Success.”

             THE TWO BOXES

I have in my hands two boxes
Which God gave me to hold.
He said, “Put all your sorrows in the black,
And all your joys in the gold.

I heeded his words, and in the two boxes
With my joys and sorrows I stored.
But though the gold became heavier each day
The black was as light as before.

With curiosity, I opened the black
I wanted to find out why.
And I saw, in the base of the box, a hole
Which my sorrows had fallen out by.

I showed the hole to God, and mused aloud,
“I wonder where my sorrows could be?”
He smiled a gentle smile at me,
“My child, they’re all here with me.”

I asked, “God, why give me the boxes,
Why the gold, and the black with the hole?”
“The gold is for you to count your blessings,
The black is for you to let go.”

                   THE “TROUBLE” TREE

The carpenter I hired to help me restore an old farmhouse had
just finished a rough first day on the job. A flat tire made him
lose an hour of work, his electric saw quit, and now his ancient
pickup truck refused to start.

While I drove him home, he sat in stony silence. On arriving, he
invited me in to meet his family. As we walked toward the front
door, he paused briefly at a small tree, touching the tips of the
branches with both hands.

When opening the door, he underwent an amazing
transformation. His tanned face was wreathed in smiles and he
hugged his two small children and gave his wife a kiss. Afterward
he walked me to the car.

We passed the tree and my curiosity got the better of me. I asked
him about what I had seen him do earlier. “Oh, that’s my trouble
tree,” he replied. “I know I can’t help having troubles on the job,
but one thing for sure, troubles don’t belong in the house with
my wife and the children. So I just hang them up on the tree
every night when I come home. Then in the morning I pick
them up again.

Funny thing is,” he smiled, “when I come out in the morning
to pick them up, there aren’t nearly as many as I remember
hanging up the night before.”

        THIS MYSTERIOUS THING CALLED “LOVE”

If you find yourself in love with someone who does not love
you, be gentle with yourself. There is nothing wrong with you.
Love just didn’t choose to rest in the other person’s heart.

If you find someone else in love with you and you don’t love
them, feel honored that love came and called at your door, but
gently refuse the gift you cannot return.

How you deal with love is how you deal with you, and all our
hearts feel the same pains and joys, even if our lives and ways are
different.

If you fall in love with another, and they fall in love with you,
and then love chooses to leave, do not try to reclaim it or to
assess blame, let it go. There is a reason and there is a meaning.

Remember that you don’t choose love. Love chooses you.

                         Valentine Inspirations

All you can really do is accept it for all its mystery when it comes
into your life. Feel the way it fills you to overflowing, then reach
out and give it away.

Give it back to the person who brought it alive in you. Give it to
others who deem it poor in spirit. Give it to the world around
you in any way you can.

Remember that the secret of love is that it is a gift, and that it can
be made to grow only by giving it away.

Love has its own time, its own seasons, and its own reason for
coming and going. You cannot bribe it or coerce it, or reason it
into staying. You can only embrace it when it arrives and give it
away when it comes to you.

Love always has been and always will be a mystery. Be glad that
it came to live for a moment in your heart.

          PRAYER FOR ALL LOVERS

O Lord, make of me an instrument of thy peace:
Where there is hatred let me put love,
Where there is resentment let me put forgiveness,
Where there is discord let me put unity,
Where there is doubt let me put faith,
Where there is error let me put truth,
Where there is despair let me bring happiness,
Where there is sadness let me bring joy,
Where there is darkness let me bring light.

O Master, grant that I may desire rather :
To console rather than to be consoled,
To understand rather than to be understood,
To love rather than to be loved,
Because it is in giving that we receive,
In forgiving that we obtain forgiveness,
In dying that we rise to eternal life.

             ATTRACTING YOUR SOUL MATE

1. Design an invocation that says when and where you will
meet your soul mate, stating the exact time, day, month
and year, and the precise location.

2. Reduce your request to its barest simplicity so that it is
     easy to memorize.

3. Through practice of meditation, get into a higher level
     of consciousness.

4. Be regular. Pray for the one at the same time each day.

5. Use the same prayer every time.

6. Hold your faith in tact. Your soul mate will appear.

             SEVEN WONDERS OF THE WORLD

A group of students were asked to list what they considered the
Seven Wonders of the World. Though there was some
disagreement, the following got the most votes:

1. Great Pyramids of Egypt
2. Taj Mahal
3. Grand Canyon
4. Panama Canal
5. Empire State Building
6. St. Peter’s Basilica
7. Great Wall of China

Gathering the votes, the teacher noted that one student, a quiet
girl, hadn’t turned in her paper yet. So, she asked the girl if she
was having trouble with her list. The girl replied, “Yes, a little. I
couldn’t quite make up my mind because there were so many.”

The teacher said, “Tell us what you have, maybe we can help.”

The girl said, “I think the Seven Wonders of the World are:”

1. To touch
2. To taste
3. To see
4. To hear

She hesitated a little, and then added:

5. To run
6. To laugh
7. To love

May you be reminded today of those
things which are truly wondrous.

TWO LOVERS: GOD AND THE SOUL

That prayer has great power which a person makes
with all his might. It makes a sour heart sweet,
a sad heart merry, a poor heart rich, a foolish heart
wise, a timid heart brave, a sick heart well,
a blind heart full of sight, a cold heart ardent.
   It draws down the great God into the little heart;
it drives the hungry soul up into the fullness of God;
it brings together two lovers, God and the soul,
in a wondrous place where they speak much of love.

       LOVE IS . . .

Love is the greatest feeling,
   Love is like a play,
Love is what I feel for you,
   Each and every day.

   Love is like a smile,
   Love is like a song,
 Love is a great emotion,
That keeps us going strong.

I love you with my heart,
    My body and my soul,
I love the way I keep loving,
 Like a love I can’t control.

                        LIFE’S LESSONS

A young man, a student in one of our universities, was one day
taking a walk with a professor, who was commonly called the
friend of the students, from his kindness to those who waited on
his instructions.

As they went along, they saw lying in the path a pair of old shoes,
which they supposed to belong to a poor man who was employed
in a field close by, and who had nearly finished his day’s work.

The student turned to the professor, saying, “Let us play the man
a trick. We will hide his shoes, and conceal ourselves behind those
bushes, and wait to see his perplexity when he cannot find them.”

“My young friend,” answered the professor, “we should never
amuse ourselves at the expense of the poor. Because you are rich,
you may give yourself a much greater pleasure by means of this
poor man. Put a coin in each shoe, and then we will hide ourselves
and watch how this affects him.”

The student did so and they both hid themselves behind the
bushes close by. The poor man soon finished his work, and came
across the field to the path where he had left his coat and shoes.

While putting on his coat he slipped his foot into one of his
shoes, but feeling something hard, he stooped down to feel what
it was, and found the coin. Astonishment and wonder were seen
upon his countenance. He gazed upon the coin, turned it around,
and looked at it again and again.

He then looked around him on all sides,
but no person was to be seen. He now put
the money into his pocket, and proceeded
to put on the other shoe; but his surprise
was doubled on finding the other coin.

His feelings overcame him; he fell upon his knees, looked up to
heaven and uttered aloud a fervent thanksgiving in which he spoke
of his wife, sick and ailing, and his children without much, whom
this timely bounty, from some unknown hand, would help in
their hour of need.

The student stood there deeply affected, and his eyes filled with
tears. “Now,” said the professor, “are you not much better pleased
than if you had played your intended trick?”

The youth replied, “You have taught me a lesson which I will
never forget. I feel now the truth of these words, which I never
understood before: “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”

Love is a smoke made with the fume of sighs.
Being purged, a fire sparkling in lovers eyes.

              MAY YOU ALWAYS FEEL LOVED

May you find serenity and tranquility in a world you may not
always understand.

May the pain you have known and the conflict you have
experienced give you the strength to walk through life facing
each new situation with optimism and courage.

May a kind word, a reassuring touch, a warm smile, be yours
every day of your life, and may you give these gifts as well as
receive them.

May you remember the sunshine when the storm seems unending.

May you teach love to those who know hate, and let that love
embrace you as you go into the world.

May the teaching of those you admire become part of you, so
that you may call upon them.

May you not become too concerned with material matters, but
instead place immeasurable value on the goodness in your heart.

May you find time in each day to see the beauty and love in the
world around you.

May you realize that each person has limitless abilities, but each
of us is different in our own way.

May you see your future as one filled with promise and possibility.

May you learn to view everything as a worthwhile experience.

May you find enough inner strength to determine your own
worth by yourself, and not be dependent on another’s judgments
of your accomplishments.

May you always feel loved.
