              Causes of
            endangerment
Many species of animals
can become endangered
because of the destruction
of their habitats,
introduction of exotic
species onto their
territories,
overexploitation, diseases,
pollution, etc.
    Endangered species
• An endangered species
  is a species which is
  currently in danger of
  becoming extinct.
  There are about 1,000
  endangered animal
  species worldwide,
  from the elephant to
  the lesser bilby .
       How to protect rare
           animals ?
• by protecting their habitats
  in national parks
• by building birdfeeds or
  birdhouses
• by recycling, reducing and
  reusing the more materials
• by informing everybody
  about this problem
• by joining an organisation
     Some facts about
    endangered species
• In the United States 735 species of plants
  and 496 species of animals are listed as
  threatened or endangered.
• 266 of these listed species have recovery
  plans currently under development.
• There are more than 3,500 protected areas
  in existence worldwide. These areas include
  parks, wildlife refuges and other reserves.
  They cover a total of nearly 5 ml sq. km, or
  3% of our total land area.
           International
           organisations
• ...like the U.S. Fish &
  Wildife Service, the
  National Wildife
  Federation etc. are
  created to help
  endangered species
  and to popularise the
  problem.
