                                     2012 Postgraduate Grant-in-Aid
                                         For Lung Cancer Research

Background
This grant is valued at $A5,000 and it is envisaged that this amount will be used to promote research,
examples include:
set up funds for a large project
top-up funding for a project which is ongoing
statistical review of a newly completed project
                          biostatistics
                          transcription
                          technical staff support
                          equipment/consumables etc
This grant is designed to facilitate lung cancer research by suitably qualified medical and allied health
practitioners (including Nursing). The research can relate to any aspect of lung cancer including the
molecular basis of the disease, its diagnosis and treatment and the evaluation of palliative strategies in
the advanced disease setting.
Ideally it would be suited to an advanced trainee or clinical research fellow undertaking a research project
as part of their postgraduate training in a lung cancer related surgical or medical subspecialty.
Information should also be provided on other sources of project funding and how the grant would be used
if the application were to be successful. Preference will be given to smaller projects (e.g. pilot studies)
which could be completed within a one to two year time frame.
In the event that the 2012 Undergraduate Grant-in-Aid for Lung Cancer Research (value: $2,500) is not
awarded these funds may be allocated as a top-up fund or used as a second award to this Postgraduate
Grand-in-Aid for Lung Cancer Research Award. Any such decision is at the discretion of the Education and
Research Committee of The Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand.

2. Applications should include a summary of the rationale for the study, the scientific design, intended
duration and whether or not it has gained ethics approval.
3. The successful applicant will be required to submit a progress report six (6) months into the project
and a final report at the conclusion of the project. Monies will be paid on the basis of 75% at the
time of signing documentation and the balance on acceptance of the final report.
