HACT is a housing- focused charity and social enterprise which works with housing associations and
other social housing providers to help them respond to a rapidly developing new civic economy, and
maximise their positive impact on the communities and neighbourhoods they work in.
With an exciting and developing work programme, and engagement from across the housing sector,
we are looking for two dynamic, energetic paid interns to help us shape and deliver our 2012-13
The affordable housing sector is facing the biggest challenges since its re-founding in the 1960s:
Changes in government subsidy for new homes that challenge the established business models
of affordable housing providers;
The sweeping away of top down targets, inspection and regulation;
Radical welfare reforms;
Reform of the planning system;
An ongoing housing crisis, both of supply and affordability;
The introduction of direct competition from the private sector
The wider context in which housing providers are operating is also radically changing:
Austerity, declining living standards and continued economic uncertainty;
Continuing social, cultural and demographic changes, including an ageing society and migration;
The emergence of localism;
Changes to the relationship between the citizen and the state;
The growth of ‘participatory democracy’ and co-production
As values-driven businesses, often based in some of our most deprived communities, and committed
to their residents and neighbourhoods, housing providers have the potential to lead and shape this
HACT is developing an exciting range of partnership projects in 2012-13, bringing together housing
providers and key players from across the broader civil society sector to develop the knowledge, and
tools and pilot the approaches needed to respond to that challenge.

Length of contract: 4 Months Fixed Term
Salary: London Living Wage (currently £8.30 PH, based on a 35hr week)
Responsible to: Deputy Chief Executive
Working with: The role will include working with the Chief Executive and Network Projects
The role requires a recent graduate/post-graduate in housing, urbanism, community development
or related subjects.
Main purpose of the role:
1. Researching, initiating and developing new partnership projects involving housing providers and
partners from outside the housing sector
2. Supporting the design and delivery of HACT’s on going events programme, and existing project
3. Contributing to the management of HACT partner relations, including updating/maintenance of
HACT’s CRM system
4. Actively seeking to build connections between HACT’s work and that if other organisations
defining new trends in urbanism, design, social enterprise, community resilience.
Applicants will need to demonstrate:
1. Recent graduate/post-graduate in housing, urbanism, community development or related
2. A strong understanding of the role and potential of housing providers within communities
3. An understanding of, interest in and/or experience of some or all of the following issues:
social impact measurement; social enterprise development; social capital; localism; community
resilience and self help; open data; social media at a community scale.
