Mount Vernon Jaycees’ House Of Horror
The Mount Vernon Jaycees (Junior Chamber) will host their 35th annual House of Horror beginning on Friday, October 2nd at “The Old Train Depot”. The House of Horror will open every Friday and Saturday throughout October, beginning at 7pm. The depot is located at 2nd and Broadway in Mount Vernon, Illinois. The Mount Vernon Jaycees provide the oldest haunted attraction in southern Illinois at 35 years. In addition to standby spooks, the Jaycees purchased another haunted attraction that was closing, and have many new ghouls to frighten victims with in this year's installment. In addition to the House of Horror, the Jaycees are arranging to have different BBQ vendors from around southern Illinois come out and vend some tasty food each Saturday. Local artist Sharon Belcher will be displaying various art pieces for the public to enjoy and even purchase if they desire. On opening night, October 2nd, there will also be an Ugliest Truck Contest beginning at 5pm. Judging will begin at 6:30, with trophies and free passes awarded to the 'winners'. Entry for competitors in the Ugliest Truck Contest will be $10. There will be a $7 admission per person collected at the door during this event on all nights. Advance and group tickets are available at a discount. Contact jaycees@mvn.net for information. The Junior Chamber has chosen some local projects to benefit during this year's House of Horror. Opening weekend, the Jefferson County Operation Iraqi Freedom will receive $1 for every paid ticket to help their great cause. The second weekend will see $1 for every paid ticket going to the Granada Center for the Performing Arts. During Red Ribbon Week, the House of Horror will give a $1 discount to every student wearing a red ribbon in support of Red Ribbon Week. “There are so many worthwhile projects in the city of Mount Vernon, we feel fortunate to be able to offer our support to these three during our 35th House of Horror,” says 2009 Jaycee president Greg Mehochko. The Jaycees will also offer local schools the opportunity to have children color a drawing and be entered into a drawing for a US Savings Bond. “Children are our future, and a coloring contest is the easiest way to let them have fun this Halloween and possibly get some savings for their future.” - Robert Broadway, 2009 House of Horror Chairman The Mount Vernon Chapter of the Jaycees is one of the 1,500 local chapters throughout the United States. The Mount Vernon Chapter has the oldest active charter in Illinois. Illinois has the largest number of Jaycees of any state in the United States. The Jaycees provide
individuals between the age of 18 and 40 the opportunity to develop personal and leadership skills while serving their community. Every year, the Mount Vernon Jaycees conduct numerous programs to serve the community and accumulate funds for operation of the Chapter as well as community donations. Included in these projects are the Mount Vernon Christmas Lights, Kidz Alley at Salute to Freedom, Annual House of Horror in October, Scholarships (awarded to MVTHS graduates), Children’s Holiday Shopping Spree, and Pillows for Seniors. The Mount Vernon Chapter holds their weekly general membership meetings on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Old Train Depot, 2nd and Broadway in Mount Vernon.
