Dear Colleague: On behalf of the Board of Directors and Professional Advisory Committee, it is our pleasure to invite you to participate in the 6th Annual Kelberman Center Autism Institute. This year’s featured speaker is National Lecturer and Education Consultant, Richard Lavoie, M.S., M.Ed. Mr. Lavoie will present practical strategies for developing social relationships for individuals with autism spectrum disorder and related learning challenges. This “Making Friends” professional education program will expand your knowledge and skill level in working with individuals with autism spectrum disorder or related learning disabilities. This day long conference will consist of practical strategies and treatment approaches for social skill development, enhancement and competence. These skills are crucial to the development and ultimate success of individuals with ASD and learning disabilities. Based on prior feedback, the day long program is structured to allow time for networking with colleagues, Kelberman Center professional staff, parents and individuals on the autism spectrum. Our highly regarded “In Our Own Words” panel presentation will provide the opportunity for the audience to interact with the speaker through a question and answer forum with adults living with ASD. The goal of the 2009 Autism Institute is for attendees to learn practical tools, strategies and approaches that can be applied at home, at school and in the community. Rick Lavoie, M.A., M.Ed., has served as an administrator for residential programs for children with special needs since 1972. He holds three degrees in Special Education and has served as an adjunct professor or visiting lecturer at numerous universities across the country. Rick also serves as a consultant on learning disabilities to several agencies and organizations including Public Broadcasting Service, the New York Times, National Center for Learning Disabilities, Girl Scouts of America, Child Magazine and WETA. His national television appearances include CBS Morning Show, Good Morning America, ABC Evening News and Disney Channel Presents. Rick has delivered his message to over 500,000 parents and professionals throughout North America. He has the distinction of having delivered Keynote Addresses for all three of the major special needs advocacy organizations in the US - Learning Disabilities Association, Council for Exceptional Children and Children with Attention Deficit Disorder.
