Send all materials and supporting documents to: Stacy Sparks Department of Journalism Southwest College 100 College Street Winfield, KS 67156-2499 • Hall of Fame Award Adviser Awards 2010 Bulletin The Hall of Fame Award is the most prestigious honor given by CMA. It honors those long-time members of College Media Advisers whose dedication, commitment and sacrifice have contributed to the betterment and value of student media programs of both the campus and nation. It also recognizes the contributions of CMA members who have actively contributed to the organization through extensive and varied service on committees, the board of directors and other leadership roles, and have presented insightful, relevant and well prepared programs and sessions. Each person being considered for this award must have contributed to college journalism education for 20 or more years while an active member of CMA. Recipients will have served as role models and mentors for both students and colleagues, been steadfast in their support for freedom of expression in the student media and willing to assume some risk in defense of that support, consistently supported the codes of ethics of CMA and other related professional associations and been trendsetters in setting standards of excellence and achievement by which other advisers can measure their contributions and achievements. The Hall of Fame committee identifies those who are eligible. The Noel Ross Strader Award perpetuates the work and memory of a long-time University of Houston professor/administrator in journalism. The award will be made only when meritorious candidates are brought forth. The person recommending a name for consideration for this award should send a letter to the CMA Awards Committee Chair and cite the reasons for the nomination. Consideration for nomination should include: the potential recipient should be a full-time teacher/adviser in campus journalism and must have exercised the principle of freedom of the press “at some risk to personal or professional welfare” or have made a “major contribution to the graphic or other physical progress of a campus publication.” This award is not limited to CMA members. This award is named to honor Reid H. Montgomery, of South Carolina, an influential member of CMA from its earlier days when it was known as the National Council of College Publications Advisers. He retired in 1988 after serving as president and treasurer of the organization, among other duties. He died in 1993. This award is presented to an individual or institution that has made outstanding contribution to the collegiate media. The award will be made only when meritorious candidates are brought forth. The person recommending a name for consideration should send the Awards Committee Chair a letter citing reasons for nomination. Consideration for nominations: The potential recipient should be a student, faculty member, corporation or non-academic individual or institution that has made an extraordinary contribution to journalism or student media advising. This award is not limited to CMA members. This award is named to honor Louis E. Ingelhart, retired Ball State University journalism professor, who has dedicated much of his life to studying, writing and teaching the applications of the First Amendment. The award will be made when meritorious candidates are brought forth. The person recommending a name for consideration should send a letter to the CMA Awards Committee Chair citing the reasons for the nomination. Consideration for nomination: a professional journalist, institution or adviser who has made extraordinary, long-term contribution in support of the First Amendment. Ingelhart First Amendment Award • Terry Vander Heyden Inspired by Terry Vander Heyden, deceased CMA Vice President for Member Services, this title was derived from the leaves of trees that are alive and growing and golden to connote richGolden Leaf ness and quality. The award was named for Terry, who was the first recipient. The award has been established to honor the memory of deceased members of CMA who have held leadership posiMemorial Award tions and/or contributed greatly to the goals of the organization. Ronald E. Spielberger Service to CMA Award This award was established in 2002 to honor CMA's executive director and long-time fall convention coordinator, Ron Spielberger, in recognition of his first 20 years of dedicated service to the organization. This award is presented to a CMA member who has made an outstanding contribution to the organization. The recipient will have advanced the quality of member services provided by initiating or executing enhancements to CMA conventions, work shops, publications, advocacy, operations and/or new programs. This award is presented to a CMA member who has had five years or more experience in college student media advising and has distinguished service in a particular area and is an adviser at the time of the nomination. Applicants must demonstrate that they subscribe to and operate under the CMA Code of Ethics. The Awards Committee has the option of not presenting the awards. others for the nominee to be considered by the committee. Each award is for excellence in college or university advising or for an outstanding contribution to the collegiate media. Professional work, civic work and classroom teaching will not be considered by the Awards Committee. Distinguished Adviser Award Nominations for the Reid H. Montgomery Distinguished Service, Noel Ross Strader, Louis E. Ingelhart First Amendment, Ronald E Spielberger Service to CMA, Terry Vander Heyden Golden Leaf Memorial awards should be made in a letter to the Awards Committee Chair. Nominators should arrange to have at least three letters in support of the nominee sent to the chair, who will present them to the CMA Awards Committee which may seek further data. Letters of support must come from individuals familiar with the contributions of the individual recommended. Those sending support materials — other than letters — for these awards should submit only the essential news clippings and other background material.. Reid H. Montgomery Distinguished Service, Noel Ross Strader, Louis E. Ingelhart, Ronald E. Spielberger Service to CMA and Terry Vander Heyden Golden Leaf Memorial Awards The award may be given in 12 categories: •four-year newspaper adviser •two-year newspaper adviser •four-year yearbook adviser •two-year yearbook adviser •four-year magazine adviser •two-year magazine adviser •four-year business adviser •two-year business adviser •four-year broadcast adviser •two-year broadcast adviser •four-year multi-media adviser •two-year multi-media adviser • All nominations for Distinguished Adviser and Honor Roll Adviser must be made on the official nomination form. Any nomination submitted without a nomination form will not be considered. No forms are necessary for the remaining adviser awards. • Nominations for adviser awards will be carried forward for three years upon the written request of the nominee. An individual is not limited in the number of times or categories in which he/she may be nominated. • Permission of the nominee is not necessary before making a nomination. The nominator is responsible for requesting recommendations and ensuring that all deadlines are met. • An adviser who has received a Distinguished Adviser Award or Honor Roll Adviser Award in the past is ineligible for that award in the same category. If applicable, nomination of these individuals in different categories will be accepted. • Original materials submitted on behalf of any award recipient will be placed in the John A. Boyd Archives, currently housed at the University of Alabama. • Judges will be members of the CMA Awards Committee. • • • • Postmark deadline for nominations: February 15, 2010 Postmark deadline for letters of support: March. 2, 2010 Packets are mailed to Awards Committee members on April 3, 2010 Materials are due back to chair on May 1, 2010 Entry Guidelines — Advisers Honor Roll Adviser Award This award is presented to a CMA member with fewer than five years' experience in college media advising. The same 12 categories and same criteria as above apply. The nominator for the Distinguished Adviser and Honor Roll Adviser award should be very familiar with the contributions of the nominee. The nominator also should be sure the individual’s approach to advising is consistent with the CMA Code of Ethics and that the nominee abides by this code in his work. For Distinguished Adviser and Honor Roll Adviser award consideration, the individual making the nomination must arrange to have a minimum of three letters and not more than five sent to the chair of the awards committee. These represent the following individuals: A student newspaper/yearbook/magazine editor or radio/television station manager who has worked with the individual, the nominee's supervisor, and one other individual familiar with the nominee's performance, an adviser (faculty/administrative colleague, professional journalist, fellow CMA member, etc.).
