OBJECTIVES
   To understand:
   ~ MAC
   ~ IP
   ~ DNS
MAC ADDRESS
~ Media Access Control address, a hardware address that uniquely identifies
each node of a network.
~ How to Find a MAC Address of your network card

 Go to ACCESSORIES
 Select Command Prompt

WHY MAC ADDRESS?
~ Network and Wireless systems can implement a security feature that will
prevent unauthorised computers from gaining access to the network. The
option is usually called MAC filtering on a wireless access point or router. It
works by inspecting the data packet that is sent from the computer, if the MAC
address matches a number on a pre-defined table, the data is allows to pass
through the network, otherwise the data is lost.

~ MAC filtering, although reasonably secure, is should not be relied upon to
provide total protection to your network. Use of filtering on wireless systems
should also be accompanied with some form of data encryption such as WEP
or WPAPSK.

IP ADDRESS
~ A unique address that identifies a computer or other electronic device on a
network.
~ Internet is made up of networks, being able to identify network would help
routers in the task of routing packets to the correct destination network.
~ Eg: 196.100.11.4
The network ID is 196.100.11 and host ID is 4.

DOMAIN NAMES SYSTEM (DNS)
~ Early days: Sending emails which requires IP add (source & destination) wasn’t
a problem – no of IP add in use was very small

~ Domain Name System (DNS) invented, so users use memorable name to
refer to a network.

~ Eg: ags.bucks.sch.uk
~ This domain name identifies a network of comps located at schools in Bucks,
   UK.
~ host for this network: mail.ags.bucks.sch.uk
~ The root is abbreviated to a full stop
Example: ags.bucks.sch.uk
~ domain .uk = includes all hosts use the top-level domain name suffix ‘uk’
~ 2nd level domain .sch = includes all hosts use the domain name suffix ‘sch’
~ 3rd level domain .bucks = includes all hosts in Bucks
~ 4th level domain .ags = includes all hosts in AGS organisation
~ mail is the public name of the host.
SOME LEVEL 1 DOMAIN NAMES
