Elks Lodge 1538
“Student of the Month”
One boy and one girl are chosen by the Elks each month.
Applications must be received by Mrs. Dirkes by the 10th of each month to be
eligible, starting September 10th and ending March 10th.
If you are not chosen for that month your application will automatically be considered
in the pool of applications for the next month (you do not need to submit another
Winners will be notified by the Elks Lodge. The “Student of the Month” and their
parents will be guests of the Santa Maria Elks Lodge at a local restaurant for dinner at
6.00 p.m. on the second Thursday of the month. Following dinner they will attend
the lodge meeting where the presentation will be made. In addition, they will receive
a check from the Elks Lodge, through the RHS Business Office, in the amount of
$200. This is usually followed by an additional check at the end of the school year
Type the application on the computer and keep the same format that is on the
application form. List your Weighted 10-12 GPA. List activities, etc. by years
(freshman, sophomore, etc.) You must include with your application one letter of
recommendation, a copy of an unofficial transcript, and a wallet-sized
photograph. A suggestion is to leave space at the top of your application and
carefully glue your photograph to the application or scan your picture and drop it into
a WORD document.
Good luck. My best advice to you is to get this application in at the beginning of the
school year. You are competing against students from Santa Maria High School, Pioneer
Valley High School, St. Joseph’s, VCA and Righetti High School. Every month you wait
lessens your chance to win.

CRITERIA FOR STUDENT OF THE MONTH AND YEAR
Grade Point Average: (25) points. Twenty-five points are maximum points
given to students. Students may have scores over a 4.0. This is because
students take honors classes which are over and above general courses
offered. These classes are weighted and this is how students get scores higher
than a 4.0 pt. average. It helps when applying to a college or university.
School Activities: (35) points. Points are given for activities that deal with
school functions. Such activities may be: 4-H, FFA, cheerleading, sports,
student government, CSF, campus clean-up, etc.
Community Involvement: (40) points. Activities may include: volunteering at
Marian Medical Hospital or Extended Care, homeless shelter, distribution of
food baskets during holidays to the needy, Walk for Cancer, Special
Olympics, Senior Center, Xmas parade, Elks, Chamber of Commerce,
Kiwanas, Altrus functions, tutoring students, etc. Working for pay or chores
around the house doesn’t count for Community Involvement points.
When applying and filling application it is best to type application and list
activities in bullet form. It makes it much easier to read for judges. Also, a
picture of student should be attached to front of application but not
mandatory. It is recommended that a copy of classes taken and current GPA
is included on application. Letters of recommendations from counselors or
others may be attached to application.
All students who receive a Student of the Month Award automatically
qualify for Student of the Year. Students of the Month receive a $200 dollar
voucher during recognition at lodge. Voucher sent to their counselor. At the
Student of the Year Awards presentation students receive and additional
$500 dollar scholarship and the students of the year receive a $1,750.00
