Title:          Development of Expert System for the Design of Airborne Equipment

         The complex design of any airborne equipment requires many a lot of parameters
to be considered simultaneously and in detail. The conventional design approach of
airborne equipment does not suit for this requirement because it starts with the functional
design & development of breadboard model for functional validation. Here the design is
sequential and the design factors considered are purely isolated. This results in a large
number of iteration leading to design overheads during final development phase.
Alternatively, the modern design concept of airborne equipment calls for an approach
wherein the functional, environmental and electromagnetic compatibility requirements
are envisaged right from the initial design phase. The major advantage of modern design
concept is the minimum design iterations. Also, the present day design concepts of
airborne equipment call for various essential requirements. These requirements include
Architecture    Selection,    Environmental       Engineering,   Reliability,   Testability,
Electromagnetic Interference/ Compatibility, Configuration Control etc. All these aspects
dictate the need for an integrated design approach for airborne equipment.

         Due to voluminous of parameters and complexity of the system, chances for the
designer to leave one or more parameters unnoticed or skip one or more design steps are
high. Therefore a need for expertise knowledge to guide the designer arises. The Expert
system with its expertise knowledge guides the designer with the design guidelines and
the testing procedure for the desired design.
       In this paper, the potential capability of knowledge-based Expert system for the
design of airborne equipment and the implementation of the Expert system for top-level
design and the Expert system for the auditing the design is demonstrated.

       The implementation is done at Aeronautical Development Establishment, Defence
R&D Organisation, Ministry of Defence, India.
