Mickey Rooney Testifies for Congress about Elder Abuse
Actor Mickey Rooney has been acting since just after the turn of the century- last century that is. The 91
year old actor has appeared in over 300 films and has been entertaining audiences for nine decades.
Sadly, his most important performance may be his testimony in front of Congress on the issue of elder
abuse. Rooney claims that he was“stripped of the ability to make even the most basic decisions about
my life.” His daily life, he said, became unbearable while he was under the care of his step-son and his
stepson’s wife. Rooney has also claimed that his step-son took advantage of Rooney financially.
Elder abuse is a significant, and growing, problem in the United States. The elderly are often easy to
victimize because they are frequently heavily dependent on the victimizer. Many elderly individuals
must depend on caregivers to take care of them, making them vulnerable to abuse. This dependence
also leads to under-reporting of abuse say most experts. The National Center for Elder Abuse estimates
that more than two million elderly Americans are abused or neglected each year. As many as five million
may be victims of financial abuse. The problem with statistics relating to elder abuse is that experts also
believe that for every one incident that is reported, as many as five more go unreported.
Elder abuse can take many forms. In some cases, the abuse is physical and obvious such as restraints
that are not necessary, pushing, shoving or even hitting a victim. More often, however, elder abuse is
more subtle and takes the form of neglect. For example, a caregiver may fail to provide medication
when needed, may go days without properly bathing a victim or may withhold adequate food.
Emotional abuse is also common in elderly victims. Financial abuse may be the most common form of
abuse of the elderly. When someone else gets control of an elderly person’s finances, either with or
without authorization, it can wreak havoc on the victim’s finances. In some cases, a lifetime of savings
can disappear within a few short weeks.
