MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Graduation from high school and successful completion of a one-year formal training course in medical office assisting at a
community college or technical institute; or graduation from high school and a combination of one year of clerical and
health/dental related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

SPECIAL CONDITION FOR CONTINUED EMPLOYMENT:
Registration as a Nurse Aide by the North Carolina Board of Nursing within four months of employment.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT Must have or obtain a valid NC driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
Background check with local and national agencies required. Selected applicant must submit to a drug-screening test and
receive a negative result for the use of drugs specified in the county policy.

GENERAL POSITION DESCRIPTION AND DUTIES:
The employee in this position will interview patients on return visits for health history, medication compliance and refer
assessments to RN and providers. This employee will create and perform database searches, answer telephone, fax
copies, makes copies, create documents, make signage and register clients. The employee in this position must maintain
files and policy manuals, establish rapport with clients and community partners, record, file and maintain patients medical
records involving laboratory test results, and appointments; contacts patients by phone or letter regarding test results,
interviews and overdue appointments; escort patients to their destination within the Health Department, set up needed
supplies for use during clinic and restocks exam rooms. This employee will also assist providers and nurses with standard
nursing assignments and laboratory functions such as setting up equipment, waived testing, assists physicians/providers
with pelvic exams and performs other standard lab tests.

KNOWLEDGE OF WORK PERFORMANCE INDICATORS:
Must possess thorough knowledge of skills needed as a medical office assistant as well as knowing procedure and medical
terminology. Must have some knowledge of resources and organizations that work closely with public health. Must have
good communication skills and clerical skills. Some knowledge of health and safety precautions. Must be able to maintain
clerical records and compile reports. Must also use sound judgment and empathy with clients. Must maintain
confidentiality. Must have the ability to follow both oral and written instructions.
