Over 200 Catholic schools around the country
opened their doors to the public last week.
Catholic Schools Day on May 19 had the theme
‘Be the Change’ and invited people in the commun-
ity to see what’s happening in schools today.
St Patrick’s School Director of Religious Studies
Raewyn Jackman says each school was recognising
its connection with all the other Catholic schools
around New Zealand.
‘‘The idea of the day was to start with a special
mass - either at the Diocesan cathedral or within
their own parish and then celebrate in their own
unique way.
‘‘The theme ‘Be the Change’ challenges us to
reflect on what we are doing to ensure we deliver an
excellent education which is engaging for all
students - enabling them to grow into responsible,
faith-filled citizens ready to live in the 21st
A group of St Patrick’s students travelled to the
cathedral in Hamilton to take part in a mass
followed by a pilgrimage walk to the museum and a
concert featuring Andrew Chinn.
At St Patrick’s the mass was followed by
morning tea and an open day where guests were
welcomed into classrooms.
Te Awamutu residents Margaret and Trevor
Carthy took the opportunity to visit their neigh-
bour, six-year-old Gemma Horan.
She showed them classroom displays and a
variety of work she had completed in room four.
In room six children were busy with their
reading and spelling programme, particularly the
‘Chunk-Check-Cheer Challenge’.
Teacher Nicola Prescott says they the pro-
gramme sees pupils taking a chunk of a word such
as ‘ash’ and seeing how many words they can make
using it.
‘‘That’s the chunk challenge, then they ‘check’ to
make sure it’s spelled correctly. ‘Cheer’ completes
the cycle - cheers if it is right - or cheer up and try
again if it’s not.’’
The students play games and carry out a range of
activities as part of the programme which was
trialled in room six and is now being used in other
classes within the school.
