The Lord of the Flies “Beastie and the Parachutist”

Definitions:
Beastie- There are the mysterious/unknown. At night, the littluns complained about them.
Parachutist- There are almost same as the Beastie. The kids are wishing to get help/rescue by them someday.

Quotes about Beastie:
“The thing is—fear can’t hurt you anymore than a dream. There aren’t any beast to be afraid of on this island.” ch 5 pg 82
Analysis: fear can’t hurt you. Because it’s not an actual object more of a state of mind. But in this case there isn’t even a
reason to be scared because there is no beast on the island.

“Kill the beast! Cut it’s throat! Spill his blood!”
Analysis: it’s the song they sing while killing pigs and also when they killed simon thinking he was the beast. It shows that
they are becoming more like savages. They are no longer humane, they are a tribe.

“Maybe there is a beast....maybe it's only us.” ch 5
Analysis: Simon’s says that the beast maybe just inside the boys mind. This world is nothing scary, we’re the one make those
fearful/horror.

“Now they talk, talk of a thing, a beast, some sort of animal.” ch 5 pg 83
This head is for the beast. It's a gift. Ch 8
Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood! Ch 9
You're a beast and a swine and a bloody, bloody thief! Ch 11
Analysis: the littluns think that they hear an animal and are scared of it, they feel it’s some sort of monster so they call it the
beast.

“He says he saw the beastie, the snake thing, and will it come back tonight...he says in the morning it turned them into
things like ropes in the trees and hung in the branches” pg36.
Analysis: This shows that no matter how Ralph attempts to assuage their fears about the beastie, the boys still fearful of the
Beastie.

“What would a beast eat? “Pig”/ “We eat pig”/ “Piggy” pg 83.
Analysis: The boys are still fearful of a beastie roaming in the island. In fact, the beast eats pig which is significant and
symbolic because later in the novel the boys kill the pig is like they kill Piggy.

“The head is for the beast. It’s a gift.” pg137
Analysis: The boys giving the pig heads to the beast. In fact, they were sacrificing the pigs to satisfy their own lust for blood.

"Simon was crying out something about a dead man on a hill." pg152
Analysis: Jack and the others heard something and they thought it was the beast. This was why Simon was kllled. He did
what the quote said, but the others didn't hear him. They warned him earlier to not go out by himself in the dark because
they thought he was the beast before too.

“Kill the beast! Cut it’s throat! Spill his blood!”
Analysis: it’s the song they sing while killing pigs and also when they killed simon thinking he was the beast. It shows that
they are becoming more like savages. They are no longer humane, they are a tribe.
Quotes about the Parachutist:

"There was a speck above the island, a figure dropping swiftly beneath a parachute, a figure that hung with dangling limbs."
pg95
Analysis: Near the middle of the book, a parachutist from the war dropped onto the island. At the same time, it symbolizes
the war outside of the island. The parachutist had been shot down by an enemy. Many people were killed due to the war
and Golding was trying to show that war was evil (from his experiences) and the island was becoming the same way.

"Simon saw a humped thing suddenly sit up on the top and look down at him." pg146
Analysis: This quote explains how Simon noticed that at the top of the mountain, that there wasn't a beast. The night
before, Jack and the other boys went up to "kill" the beast but ultimately ran due to being afraid. That "humped thing" was
the parachutist.

"Then as the blue material of the parachute collapsed the corpulent figure would bow forward. sighing, and the flies settle
once more" pg146
Analysis: The quote describes the parachutist after a couple of days of being on the island. It was a smelly, bloody, dead
corpse. Flies were starting to cover it. It was so bad that Simon threw up because of how gruesome the body looked and
that the man was actually dead.

"The beast was harmless and horrible; and the news must reach the others as soon as possible"pg146
Analysis: It was before Simon died. He figured out that the beast was nothing less than a parachutist from the war. It was
something important to tell the others but cost him his life. The timing was just off for when Simon decided to tell them. It
showed that there was truly no adult supervision.

"So as the stars moved across the sky, the figure sat on the mountain-top and bowed and sank and bowed again."
Analysis: talking about the parachutist as if it is still alive (sank and bowed again) even though we know that it was dead
even before it landed on the island.

"It was furry. There was something moving behind its head-wings. The beast moved too"
Analysis: talking about the parachutist as if it is the beast. the littluns on the island think that the parachutist is the beast.
