dadathedudu Asked: When i start 'puc the pirate' there comes a pop up window with the following question:
switching to the direct3d reference rasterizer, a software device that implements the entire direct3d
featureset, but runs very slowly.do you wish to continue?' for starting puc the pirate i need to click yes, but
then the game is sooooooo slow that I can't test it. my hardware(1700xp+,256ram,radeon9200) should be
good enough. What am I doing wrong?

Answered Privately: This could be a problem with graphics drivers. Make sure you can run other
Direct3D applications, and get the latest driver. You might also try reinstalling the DirectX runtime.

Fransber Asked: Why i can't debug the code?

Answered Privately: You'll have to be a little more specific for us to help you.

m Asked: Can we find a complete class diagram somewhere?

Answered Privately: That's not something that we have or is available. It's possibly something we can
include in the future, but don't count on it.

Alex Z. Asked: I forgot to download yesterday's slides. Is there a way to get them today?

Eugene Asked: Is Tuesday presentation available for download?
nea Asked: The problem is not to install and rebuild but to use the new references. As said yesterday
Direct3D, DirectInput, DirectSound and Direct3DX were merged into one DirectX reference, Version
2.0.0.0 (<- important, october release has 2.0.5.0 I think). And if just hat reference is used there are only the
December methods. If I just open the project and compile it will work. Because of the right references. But
if the references point to dec, it will fail. That was my point. If every attendee just open and compile and
program on that base it should definitly work.

Merritt Asked: how do you lock the frame rate in the engine?

kroamian Asked: how I can add slow efect?

Daemien Asked: Would it not be better to set up a seperate timer system for things like god mode so that
its not frame rate dependent?

Jeff Asked: I was not able to load the latest version of the DirectX SDK because I am running Win 2000.
Will I be able to build the application using the last win2000 compatible version of the SDK?

Answered Privately: This is something we can check into for you, and hopefully find out by next webcast.
I'm not sure what tests we've done on 2000.

Eugene Asked: Is Tuesday presentation available for download?

Answered: The presentations are made available 24 hours after they are given. It should be made available
later today.

mangokiwi.com Asked: Will we cover what kind of automatic testing we can set up for such code?
Something like Unit testing...

kroamian Asked: how I can add slow efect?

Answered Privately: Keep following along with the presentation, and within the next couple presentations
you should have a good idea how to do this.

droid Asked: tuesday presentation is already available
http://msevents.microsoft.com/cui/eventdetail.aspx?eventID=1032286777&Culture=en-US
Merritt Asked: how do you lock the frame rate in the engine?

Answered Privately: in Main.cs you should see these lines of code //controlling the FPS double time1 =
time; while ((time1 - time) < (1.0f / 60.0f)) time1 = FrameworkTimer.GetTime(); which means if the time
that has passed is not >= 1/60th of a second, wait until it is and then continue the gameloop

mangokiwi.com Asked: Will we cover what kind of automatic testing we can set up for such code?
Something like Unit testing...

Answered Privately: The focus of the webcast is 3D programming in C#. We will not cover automatic
testing methods.

Merritt Asked: ah, thank you

Daemien Asked: Would it not be better to set up a seperate timer system for things like god mode so that its
not frame rate dependent?

Answered Privately: This depends on the system you have. Normally you would on a PC use a timer
system. Utilitzing the frame rate is usually only done on a console because you can certain of the hardware
you are working with.

nea Asked: The problem is not to install and rebuild but to use the new references. As said yesterday

Answered Privately: Ah, sorry about the miscommunication. I totally understand what you're saying now.
I just looked and I'm still using the 1.4.something version that's still in December. We won't be switching it
to 2.0 or using that. Sorry it took so long for me to get that info from you! I'll try to get Doug to include a
comment about that! Thanks!

Amar Asked: Is it that Model Class not related to database, I mean we do nat have any Database
connection in the Game??

Tim Asked: Is the structure of the solution -- the organization of the classes and such -- fairly typical for 3d
games in general, or does that vary widely?

nea Asked: I have to be sorry. I should have cleared that reference thing up before. If you stick to october I
will try to convert every release to 2.0. Best learning method ^^'

jim Asked: What tools were used to create the meshes used here

Gabriel Asked: there is a Microsoft DirectX3DX error (yellow) here at my code....how can i fix it ?
nea Asked: I have to be sorry. I should have cleared that reference thing up before. If you stick to october I
will try to convert every release to 2.0. Best learning method ^^'

Answered Privately: Hopefully the information presented is still mostly relevant. Thanks again for the
info.

jim Asked: What tools were used to create the meshes used here

Answered: the developers of the materials used 3DS Max 6.0 and Panda .X Exporter (free .X exporter)

Kenneth Asked: is that layers in the mesh?

Amar Asked: Is it that Model Class not related to database, I mean we do nat have any Database connection
in the Game??

Answered Privately: I'm not sure what you're referring to exactly, but I don't believe we have a database
connection in the game.

Carolina Asked: could you explain better what this subset thing is?

JMelton Asked: Is .x a viable format to use in professional-quality games? Or is it limited in terms of
texturing/animation/whatever...?

sam Asked: if and is able to program in vb.net vs c as there any disavantages and/or disadvantages

german Asked: are we going to see any info on how to use the PC compatible xbox360 controller?

Tim Asked: Is the structure of the solution -- the organization of the classes and such -- fairly typical for 3d
games in general, or does that vary widely?

Answered Privately: This is typical of a simple game. Commercial games have much more complicated
engines and that complicates the design of the engine as well. Those tend to vary a lot.
Carolina Asked: could you explain better what this subset thing is?

Answered Privately: Every mesh can have multiple materials when it's modeled. For example you could
have a table where the legs are made out of something else, or might have a different texture assigned to
them. This will tell it to render Subset(0) which may be the legs then Subset(1) the tabletop.

mangokiwi.com Asked: Not a question: Blender3d is an open source 3d modelling tool that people can use
as well

sam Asked: if and is able to program in vb.net vs c as there any disavantages and/or disadvantages

Answered Privately: We're only covering C#, and most of us don't have experience with VB.NET so that's
beyond the scope of this webcast.

kroamian Asked: how i can export from maya to .X or from 3d studio?

rjweng Asked: What are some other programs that can be used for Meshes? free ones?

german Asked: are we going to see any info on how to use the PC compatible xbox360 controller?

Answered Privately: No, we will not be covering how to use game controllers.

AJS Asked: I am a bit confused about definiton of mash - is this a 3d model? like the shape of things in the
game?

Kenneth Asked: is that layers in the mesh?

Answered Privately: If you were referring to the subsets within a mesh. Every mesh can have multiple
materials when it's modeled. For example you could have a table where the legs are made out of something
else, or might have a different texture assigned to them. This will tell it to render Subset(0) which may be
the legs then Subset(1) the tabletop.

rjweng Asked: What are some other programs that can be used for Meshes? free ones?

Answered Privately: Blender3D is an open source modeling tool that is available.
droid Asked: When you have existing "3d engine SDK", like here, is it a much work to add some simple
HLSL effects? I've toyed around with them on RenderMonkey but no idea how to incorporate in this.

mangokiwi.com Asked: Not a question: Blender3d is an open source 3d modelling tool that people can use
as well

Answered: Thanks.

AJS Asked: I am a bit confused about definiton of mash - is this a 3d model? like the shape of things in the
game?

Answered Privately: Yes that is what a mesh is.

Jeff Green Asked: 3DS Max 6.0 is obtained from?

Radi Asked: how about animation.cs? would you cover it as well?

bmazotti Asked: The animations were created with 3DS Max (and exported to the .x file), or only the
meshes (static model)?

JMelton Asked: Is .x a viable format to use in professional-quality games? Or is it limited in terms of
texturing/animation/whatever...?

Answered Privately: .X is not a bad fileformat professionally or casually... The only problem comes from
it being so general. A .X file can have so many different things in it, that it could be found useless in a
project that has very specific needs. But it is fast, you can easily write loader for it, so it does work for
professionals, that don't need specific functionality in the file format

chas Asked: It does not appear that the slides are yet available for this presentation (PDF has only one pic).

kroamian Asked: how i can export from maya to .X or from 3d studio?
Answered Privately: I do not have much experience with Maya. However, in Resonation we used the
Panda DirectX Exporter to convert to the .x format from 3D studio

Eric L Asked: As a more general modelling question, is there a way to export .X files from
Animation:Master?

droid Asked: When you have existing "3d engine SDK", like here, is it a much work to add some simple
HLSL effects? I've toyed around with them on RenderMonkey but no idea how to incorporate in this.

Answered Privately: HLSL code is definitely an advanced topic. Getting them to work in RenderMonkey
is one step, but getting them integrated into the engine can be a bit of a headache. It's not a ton of work, but
there are a bunch of different steps and easy to get wrong. We won't be going into that, but it's not super
hard, and not trivial either.

karen Asked: What's your favorite magazine for game developers? gdmag.com?

Daemien Asked: What sound formats are supported by Direct Sound Natively?

bmazotti Asked: The animations were created with 3DS Max (and exported to the .x file), or only the
meshes (static model)?

Answered: All "meshes" in the game (static or animated) were built in 3DS Max. In the static mesh files
there will be no information about animation key frames, where as Animated mesh files wiill contain each
animation set where each set has the Transformations for each key frame.

Carolina Asked: what is the sound format used by the engine?

Jeff Green Asked: 3DS Max 6.0 is obtained from?

Answered Privately: I'm not sure that version 6.0 is available. The current version is 8.0. It is made by
either AutoDesk or Discreet (I'm not sure, it has changed hands a few times).

Scott Asked: What sound formats are available in DirectX?
Carolina Asked: what is the sound format used by the engine?

Answered Privately: The end game plays WAVs.

Scott Changes Question To: What sound formats are available for playback in DirectX?

karen Asked: What's your favorite magazine for game developers? gdmag.com?

Answered Privately: Game Developer is the only magazine I subscribe to. I find it quite useful.

Kenneth Asked: key frame of movement of the character?

Daemien Asked: What sound formats are supported by Direct Sound Natively?

Answered: Direct sound only has .wav loading functionality. DirectMusic has the ability to
load .wav, .mid, .mp3 and so on, but for people interested in using Direct Sound will need to pay to get the
MP3 sdk to load mp3's legally, and for free ones you can get free sdk's for Ogg Vorbis, so Direct Sound is
for people that really want to make there own sound engine with complete control

Answered Privately: Thanks for your interest!

AndrewBoudreau Asked: It seems strange to implement some of the timers like godmode in a framecount
instead of elapsed time. Is this for simplicity or does it have real advantages

Answered Privately: Yes it would be better to implement this based on an elapsed time instead of a frame
counter. I would imagine it was created this way for the sake of simplicity

droid Asked: Are you certain I can't use December SDK or have you just not test this with that yet? I was
planning to install that since the new MDX beta looks very good.

MCW Asked: the retail question is probably about the Q&A above. Perhaps they meant 'release' (as
opposed to debug)

DV Asked: It was stated earlier that with C# 2005 EE that Main.cs is created for you when a DirectX

into Action Mapping in DirectX but if you have the SDK installed and go to the documentation you should
be able to see the functionality of it.

Dasc Asked: I only have Visual Studio 2003, will the code be made available for this version to compile

Xico Asked: how to test (automatic test) this code? Do you have a framework like junit? Or how you do at
digipen?

Answered Privately: That's one of the aspects we're lacking. We have no automatic testing, but it's
definitely a good thing to do.

Michael Changes Question To: I tried compiling the solution, resulting in an error message: Could not
load file or assembly 'Puc the Pirate, version=9.8.299.0, Culture=neutral, PublicTokenKey=null' or one of
its dependencies. Failed to grant minimum permission requests. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80131417).
Any ideas as to what is wrong here? Follow up appears to indicate a problem compiling solution located on
a remote file server...however a new error has appeared when compiling from local hard drives. I'll discuss
it in a separate question.

Michael Asked: New error in compilation/running: Failed to create the 3D device. Out of memory in
dxmut.cs line 2111

Michael Changes Question To: New error in compilation/running: Failed to create the 3D device. Out of
video memory in dxmut.cs line 2111

Michael Asked: New error in compilation/running: Failed to create the 3D device. Out of video memory in
dxmut.cs line 2111

Answered Privately: Puc the Pirate may require more video memory than is available on your video card.
If you have another computer to you with a video card with more memory try that one. If your video card
has ample video memory (32+) it may be another problem
