Ralph’s Camp
 Piggy is virtually blind without his glasses
 Piggy still demands that Ralph call an assembly
  An assembly only for the four boys
  Desperately trying to hold on to order
 Ralph: “Are we savages or what?” (170)

Ralph’s Plan
 “Supposing we go, looking like we used to, washed
  and hair brushed—after all we aren’t savages really
  and being rescued isn’t a game—We could smarten
  up a bit and then go” (170)
 “Well, we won’t be painted because we aren’t
  savages.” (172)
  Desires to return to civilization and abandon
   their savageness

Piggy’s Plan
 Wants to talk to Jack
  Symbolism
    Intelligence trying to overcome our savageness
    What will win?
 Ralph warns him that he will get hurt

Piggy’s Plan
 “What can he do more than he has? I’ll tell him what’s
  what. You let me carry the conch, Ralph. I’ll show him the
  one thing he hasn’t got.” (171)
   What else can Jack do?
   Does Jack care about the conch and what it represents?
 “But I don’t ask for my glasses back, not as a favor. I don’t
  ask you to be a sport, I’ll say, not because you’re strong, but
  because what’s right’s right. Give me my glasses, I’m going
  to say—you got to!” (171)
   Will this line of reasoning (ethics, morals) work with
    Jack?

The Forgotten Fire
 Ralph says they need smoke but seems to forget why.
 Piggy must remind him.
 Ralph gets angry
   “I knew that! Are you suggesting--?...I knew it all the
    time. I hadn’t forgotten…I hadn’t forgotten.” (173)
 “The twins were examining Ralph curiously, as though they
  were seeing him for the first time.” (173)
   Are they beginning to wonder about his abilities as chief?

The Confrontation
 Roger
  Begins to throw rocks at Sam and Eric
  “Some source of power began to pulse in Roger’s
   body.” (175)
    What power?
    • His savageness?
    • His fundamental human evil nature?

Ralph Confronts Jack
 “You’re a beast and a swine and a bloody,
  bloody thief!” (179)
 “Which is better, law and rescue, or hunting
  and breaking things up?” (180)

Piggy
 “I’ve got this to say. You’re acting like a crowd of
  kids.” (180)
 “Which is better—to be a pack of painted Indians
  like you are, or to be sensible like Ralph is?” (180)
 “Which is better—to have rules and agree, or to
  hunt and kill.” (180)

Roger
 Constantly throwing rocks at Sam, Eric and Piggy
 Eventually he leans on the lever with all his might
  to release the giant boulder
  Lands on Piggy
    “Piggy’s arms and legs twitched a bit, like a pig’s
     after it has been killed.” (181)
    Piggy falls onto the flat rock
    The tide takes him out to sea

Roger
 Destroys the conch
  “the conch exploded into a thousand white
   fragments and ceased to exist.” (181)
  Order no longer exists
