Attendees are responsible for making their own hotel arrangements. The cut-off date to
reserve rooms from the AmeriSuites block is Friday, 8 March 2002 (note that Las Vegas
is in the Pacific time zone: GMT–8). Ask for the “ISO” room rate when reserving from the
block. After the cut-off date, rooms may be reserved at the USD 90.00 rate, but only based
on availability. In addition, for check-in/check-out dates beyond the range indicated in the
above table, rooms at the USD 90.00 rate may be granted only based on availability.
Therefore, making reservations early is strongly advised. Please note that any
reservations cancelled less than 48 hours of arrival will be charged the first night’s
All rooms at the AmeriSuites are suites (bedroom separate from living room) with either two
double beds or one king-size bed. Amenities in the suite include a hairdryer, iron/ironing
board, and a wet bar with mini-refrigerator, microwave oven, and coffee-making facilities.
The living room includes a sleeper sofa and a work desk with telephone/dataport.
Telephone calls to toll-free numbers are, of course, free; however, AmeriSuites charges
USD 0.50 per telephone call for local numbers. This charge is waived for members of
AmeriSuites’ affinity program “Prime Rewards” wherein members can earn frequent flyer
miles on American, Continental, or Delta airlines. Since there is no cost to join the program,
those who expect to make in-room calls to local telephone numbers should ask to join the
program when checking in. Note that in-room direct calls to long-distance or international
telephone numbers is very expensive and is strongly discouraged.
The AmeriSuites is located conveniently between the Las Vegas Airport, 3 km away, and the
Las Vegas “Strip” (main casino area), 2 km away; see the map on the last page. The
AmeriSuites airport has a free, on-demand shuttle van to take guests to and from the airport
between 05:00 and 01:00 and the Strip (drop-off/pick-up point is the Aladdin Hotel/Casino)
between 05:00 to 00:00. If not renting a car when arriving at the airport, use the free phones
at the baggage claim area to call the AmeriSuites; instructions on when and where to meet
the van will be provided. If renting a car, the hotel offers free parking; driving directions from
the airport to the hotel are shown on the last page.
The AmeriSuites has neither a casino on the premises (thus cutting down on traffic and
making for quieter, safer meetings) nor restaurants. However, the Hard Rock Café
Hotel/Casino is directly across the street with a variety of restaurants and diversions
available at lunchtime and in the evenings.
The AmeriSuites has a large lobby with chairs and tables in which breakfast (self-service,
buffet-style) is offered from 06:00 to 09:30, Monday to Friday, and from 06:30 to 10:00,
Saturday and Sunday. Coffee is available in the lobby 24 hours per day. The SC 5
Secretariat will arrange for additional drinks and snacks to be set up in the lobby or in the
meeting rooms at break times.
On Wednesdays from 17:30 to 19:00 the hotel hosts a reception featuring complimentary
appetizers (finger sandwiches, cheese, crackers, etc.) and drinks (beer, wine and sodas).
The Working Groups are advised to time the end of their meetings so that participants can
attend this function.
Each meeting room for the Working Groups will be equipped with a whiteboard and markers,
a 1.25m x 1.25m projection screen, a computer projector, power strips, and extension cords.
Seating for a maximum of 15 in each room will be arranged conference style. Working
Group convenors should alert the SC 5 secretariat as early as possible, but no later than 1
April 2002, of any special meeting room requirements.
For the SC 5 plenary, the meeting room will be arranged conference style seating 25 people
with a 1.8m x 1.8m projection screen, a computer projector, power strips, and extension
cords. Those giving presentations and needing special materials/equipment should also
alert the SC 5 secretariat as early as possible and no later than 1 April 2002.
For all meetings, the SC 5 secretariat will, to the largest extent possible, use outside copying
facilities to control costs of duplicating hardcopies (the AmeriSuites charges USD 0.20 per
page). As such, the SC 5 secretariat will arrange with Working Group convenors and SC 5
delegates appropriate times for pick-up and delivery of documents. Those not wishing to
give their documents to the SC 5 secretariat for copying are then on their own regarding
copying charges incurred. Therefore, meeting participants are strongly urged to share
documents electronically and to arrange ahead of time the formats of portable memory (e.g.
diskettes, flash cards, CDs) to be used. The SC 5 secretariat uses 1.44 MB formatted
diskettes and will have extras available at the meetings to those needing them.
Meeting room assignments are tentatively as follows:
Meeting Dates Room Name
SC 5/WG 5 15-17 April Sinatra
SC 4-SC 5/JWG 8 15-17 April Del Rio
SC 5/WG 6 16-17 April Sterling
SC 5 plenary 18-19 April Nirvana
Changes in assignments may be needed to accommodate special requests. In any case,
the meetings will be clearly posted in the hotel. The SC 5 secretariat will arrange to have
card keys issued to the Working Group convenors so that rooms can be locked during lunch
or extended breaks.
Finally, about Las Vegas: the city is legendary for its world-class gambling and entertainment
that goes on 24 hours per day. The AmeriSuites is fully stocked with literature concerning
shows, tours, golfing, etc. For those wanting to get away from the city, a number of day trips
(either self-guided with a rental car or with a tour group) can be made to well-known areas
such as the Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam/Lake Mead, and Death Valley. Attendees can
expect beautiful weather: daytime temperatures will average 25ºC with nights somewhat
cooler; a pullover or jacket is advisable for the evenings. Las Vegas is in the desert -- there
is no need to pack an umbrella.
If you have any questions concerning the arrangements, please contact Greg Winchester,
the SC 5 secretary, at firstname.lastname@example.org, or by telephone at +1 703 841 3299.
