Outline

 Increasing need for computers and data
    servers
 Increasing need for energy
 Problems of using computers and data
    servers
 Some solutions for these problems
 Virtualization
 Conclusion:why green computing is
    important?
Computing Goes Green

 Computer rooms are very hot to handle
 Web sites require more and more power
    hungry machines
 Between 2000 and 2007 number of servers
increased from 5.6 million to 12 million in
    USA
 Annual electricity cost for servers increased
from $1.3 billion to $2.7 billion in the world
Computing Goes Green

 Cooling costs are increasing
 Companies have to pay firstly for all
equipment then also have to pay for keep
    cool them
 Cooling costs have helped raise the avarege
    annual utility bill of a 100.000 square-foot
    data center $5.9 million
Computing Goes Green

           All these
          additional power
          consumption is an
          additional
          consumption on
          environment too!!
Computing Goes Green

 Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center
resolve the cooling problem by investing
    $500.000 to overhead air conditioners
 Totally their data center is 6.000 square-foot
    and before solution the temperature
    skyrocketed to 100 degrees
 Their aim is keep the data centers at 60
    degree
Computing Goes Green

 Emerson Network find a solution called
    Liebert XD
 Liebert XD sits directly on top of server racks
and conditions the air with pipes
 It containing waterless refrigerant
Computing Goes Green

 Degree Controls found another solution
 They install floor tiles equipped with powerful
fans that blow cool air directly onto servers
 The tiles cost $1.800 each
 HP now offers an energy management
system named Dynamic Smart Cooling that
directs cool air to the hot spots in data center
Computing Goes Green

 Companies all over the world save from
environment and also save from dollars
 Google,Microsoft,HSBC are using
    hydroelectric power
 Salesforce.com using carbon footprint by
    investing in renewable energy
Computing Goes Green

 Hardware and software systems are concern
about green computing and energy saving
 Some organizations choosing thin clients
 They connect the clients directly to the
    servers
 They use less power than the destop
 Example:Verizon Wireless
Computing Goes Green

 City University of New York adopted
    software called Surveyor
 It turn off the computers when they are
    inactive automatically
 CUNY saved $320.000 annually
 Quad Graphics saved $70.000 annually
Computing Goes Green

 Microsoft created Vista to save power
 Microsoft enhanced sleeping features to
save from power and also from dollars
 In slleeping mode computers may draw as
little as 3 to 4 watts of power than 100 watts
Computing Goes Green

 HP reduces power costs by 20 to 25 percent
through a consolidation of servers and data
    centers
 Company uses it as a selling strategy
 Intel uses more efficient chips in their servers
 Intel created Dual-Core Intel Xeon 7100micro
    processors
 Nearly three times better performance per
    watt achieved
Computing Goes Green

 Virtualization reduces the number of servers
required to run a firm’s applications
 The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center
    and Swinerton Construction are using
    virtualization
 Swinerton saved $140.000 by using
    virtualization
Computing Goes Green

         FOR A GREENER WORLD
         FOR OUR CHILDREN
         SAVE FROM
         ENVIRONMENT AND
         POWER!!!
