How do I raise money?
For most of us asking for money is scary. But remember, you are not asking for yourself. You
are asking for all those affected by melanoma, who will benefit from your strength and
commitment to defeat this disease.
Now, time to start raising money. Ask! We have included a template letter for you to customize
which will help in your fundraising. Tell your story of hope. Show your passion and
enthusiasms for the cause – your spirit will be infectious!
Don’t be shy. Ask everyone you know. Even those that you haven’t spoken to in a while,
including old high school and college friends, and former teachers.
We have also included a sample fundraising letter and donation form for your use.

Sample Fundraising Letter
Dear [insert name]:
This year on [insert date], I have decided to take on a very special commitment. A commitment
not only to myself, but to so many others beyond myself. Over the next [insert weeks/months] I
will train to [run/walk] [26.2/13.1] miles in the [name of marathon/half-marathon]. This event
will be so much more than “just a race” – it will be raising money for Teb’s Troops, an
organization committed to supporting the treatment, prevention, and research of melanoma
through the Melanoma Research Foundation and CancerCare.
My commitment starts now. Over the next several [weeks/months] I will spend many hours in
training and helping to spread the word about melanoma awareness. I have also committed to
raise [insert dollar amount] to participate as a Teb’s Troops [marathon/half-marathon]
[runner/walker]. However, I have set a personal goal of [insert dollar].
Now, I am asking you to make a commitment too. Please consider making a fully tax-deductible
donation to help me achieve this goal. I will be doing all the [running/walking]...all you need to
do is send in the enclosed donation form with your donation. I have even included an addressed
envelope! Consider foregoing one evening out and spending the money on a cause that will
affect someone you love or know in your lifetime.
This is a very important event for me. [Insert personal story or inspiration for running/walking]. I
am walking in their [honor/memory].
You may know someone who has been affected by melanoma and I would be proud to [run/walk]
in their honor as well.
Melanoma is the most deadly, least treatable of all skin cancers, accounting for most skin cancer
related deaths. The number of new cases of melanoma is increasing at an alarming rate; indeed,
incidents of melanoma are rising faster than any other cancer. If caught in its early stages,
melanoma is almost always curable. However, if left untreated (or unnoticed), melanoma can
metastasize rapidly to other parts of the body. Once the melanoma has metastasized, the situation
is grave. At present, there is no therapy available that consistently treats late stages of melanoma
Thank you for taking the time to read this letter. I hope that you will share in this incredible
adventure with me. Please call me or e-mail me if you have any questions or just want to talk.
