NEW RIVER VALLEY G.O.A.L.S. PROGRAM GREENHOUSE IN THE BEGINNING Master Gardeners of the NRV • WERE THE FIRST TO SUPPORT THE PROGRAM WITH A $500.00 GRANT • APPOINTED A LIAISON TO COORDINATE ACTIVITIES • SET UP A CURRICULUM FOR A HORTICULTURE CLASS • PROVIDED SPEAKERS AND DEMONSTRATIONS • MEMBERS DONATED SEEDS AND POTS • HELPED STUDENTS BUILD BIRDHOUSES FOR CHRISTMAS PRESENTS • PROVIDED CONSULTATION FOR LANDSCAPING AND GARDENS • DONATED BOOKS AND REFERENCE MATERIALS • SET THE PRECEDENT FOR OTHER CIVIC GROUPS TO SUPPORT THE PROGAM • DESERVE OUR GRATITUDE Christiansburg Kiwanis Club •Donated time, money and labor to construct the greenhouse kit. •Mentored students through the entire process of planning and building. The “Bill Chafin Greenhouse” Bill Chafin is a retired Kiwanias Member. He volunteered to take on the duties of Project Planner and general contractor. He spent numerous hours planning and working on the project. BUILT IN DRAINAGE READY FOR CONCRETE COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS! WHO’S GOING TO GET THIS ONE? PROFESSIONAL EXPERTISE They said it went here! Kiwanias workday Ventilation vents installed. Yes, it all came in boxes, with numbers! Truss raising day! Cross beam installation was tricky. Lots of supervisors! Glad he knows what he’s doing! Ready for the next step. Starting to look like a greenhouse? Inserting and caulking plexi-glass windows Bill takes a break! Solar lifters make ventilation automatic! Now for the rest of the ceiling panels. We still have lots of pieces???? Potting tables installed YES! We have electricity plus an automatic light timer to lengthen growing days. Houston, we have a greenhouse!! Thanks to the Kiwanias!! Landscaping begins! •We must have a “water feature”!!! •The arch adds a whimsical touch. The first indoor growing season. We put the “green” in greenhouse! Garden sets from seeds. More digging?? Time for a sidewalk, boys. Outside view of greenhouse and sidewalk construction. Beautiful aggregate sidewalk! Let’s make it even more beautiful! Where were those gas lines? Another before….. …And after picture. • Students built raised beds for herbs, perennials, butterfly gardens and lots of color! •What a nice spot for a picnic. Spring brings results of fall labors! Pansies and tulips! Students built retaining walls. •Time to plant seedlings form the greenhouse into the facility garden. •Produce is shared with staff and used on the salad bar. •Landscaping the grounds of the facility provides more experiences for the students. •The Summer 2006 project is to landscape the whole facility since they did such a good job with the greenhouse area. Arch Reconstruction This spring, Larry Kruger, PD Supervisor and the students re-engineered and rebuilt the Amish Arch to accommodate the increased size of the sidewalk. We will plant grape vines on either side.
