SUNDAY, APRIL 12, 2009 SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS 100 MERCURYNEWS.COM 7E SV150 2009 TOP 10 10 LISTS SV150 TOPLISTS SALES CHANGES Combined sales for the SV150 grew 5.2 percent in 2008 compared with the year before, less than half the gain of the year before. It was the smallest gain since 2001 when sales dropped in the wake of the dot-com bust. In 2008, sales dropped at 54 companies, or 36 percent, of the SV150. WORK FORCE CHANGES SALES PER EMPLOYEE The number of workers employed by the SV150 jumped 20 percent in 2008, the biggest gain ever. The rise was largely due to a 149,000 increase in workers at Hewlett-Packard, which last year acquired Electronic Data Systems. These numbers do not reflect widespread layoffs announced since the beginning of 2009. Sales per employee among the SV150 as a group fell in 2008 by $60,463, or 12.5 percent, compared with the year before. Companies can improve that number by selling more or employing fewer workers. Ninety-six companies increased sales in 2008, while 99 companies hired more workers. Biggest percentage gains SV150 Rank rank Company 2008 Sales (in millions) 1-Yr. Chg.
