The University of Illinois is a safe community, but it is not crime free . Our campus district is served by three
full-fledged police departments including, the University of Illinois Police Department, the Champaign
Police Department, and the Urbana Police Department . Each department works tirelessly to protect and
serve our campus community . Students also have a role to play in ensuring their safety on campus . Please
read the safety tips below and do your part to help keep our community safe .
Safety Tips
       • Theft is the #1 reported crime on campus. Never leave your items unattended.
       • Lock your residence hall room door whenever you leave.
       • Keep your valuables locked in your residence hall closet.
       • Report any unusual or suspicious activity that you witness to the police.
       • Use well-lighted, well-travelled routes. The shortest route isn’t always the safest.
       • Be aware of your surroundings - especially if you are walking alone or after dark.
       • Avoid walking or running alone at night.
       • Avoid using distracting technology (e.g., phones, MP3 players, etc.) when walking or running.
       • Avoid levels of intoxication that will leave you vulnerable and unaware.
       • Do not display valuables openly and be cautious around ATM machines.
       • Have your keys ready in your hand so you can open the door to your home or car immediately.
       • Trust your instincts. If you feel uncomfortable leave immediately. Go to a well-lighted area with
lots of people and do not hesitate to call 911 if you feel threatened .
       • If you perceive you are in danger call 911, yell or blow a loud whistle, and look for an escape
         route .
       • Utilize SafeWalks and SafeRides.
       • Program an In Case of Emergency or “ICE” number in your cell phone.

Essential Connections
for Campus

There are a couple essential tools in getting connected at University of Illinois, your I-CARD and your
UIN (university identification number) .

WhAt iS AN i-CArd?
I-CARD Programs
http://www .icard .uillinois .edu/
Illini Union Bookstore (First Floor)
809 S . Wright Street, Champaign, IL
Hours: Monday–Friday, 9:00 a .m .–5:00 p .m .
(217) 244-0135

The i-card is your official student ID . You should
have received your i-card during registration .
The i-card will allow you to access several
services on campus . We recommend you keep
it with you at all times . Common services
accessed with the i-card include: University
Meal Plans, University Residence Halls door access, Mass Transit
District (MTD) bus service, Campus Recreation facilities, University Library service, McKinley Health Center
services, and optional banking services with TCF bank .

Getting your i-card
If you did not receive an i-card during registration, visit the Campus ID Center on the first floor of the Illini
Union Bookstore . You will be asked to show a current, government issued photo ID from the Accepted
Proof of Identity list . For details on accepted proof of identity documentation follow this link: http://www .
icard .uillinois .edu/proofs . Additional questions should be directed to i-card Programs . Their web address is
http://www .icard .uillinois .edu .

Campus Debit Accounts
Campus debit accounts are pre-paid, online debit accounts operated by the University and used for
payment at campus-run locations . On the Urbana campus, your University Meal Plan (e .g ., classic credits,
café credits, and extra credits) is considered a campus debit account . You cannot use any ID card to charge
purchases to a University student account . Please note: campus debit accounts are not TCF Bank accounts .

What’s a UIN (University Identification Number)?
A University Identification Number (UIN) is a unique combination of nine numbers that the University
uses to permanently identify people in its computer and recordkeeping . Your UIN is printed on your i-card .
Please refer to your i-card or letter of admission to learn your UIN . If you do not have an i-card or your
letter of admission, call the CITES Help Desk at (217) 244-7000 for assistance .

According to section 2-202 of the Student Code, the University requires all single undergraduate students
to reside in certified housing during their entire first academic year with limited exceptions (see 2-202 [b]
of the Student Code for the exceptions) . A variety of certified housing options for undergraduate students
exist at the University of Illinois . They include university and privately owned residence halls, apartments,
fraternities, sororities, and houses . The vast majority of new undergraduate students reside in University
Residence Halls (URH) . Below we have provided information on living in URH . Please know that private
certified housing options have similar amenities and staffing . If you reside in a non-university owned
facility, we encourage you to explore your apartment, hall, or house to learn about their services .

An audition is required for admission to any University of Illinois orchestra . However, all string players who
audition will be placed in an orchestra . Information about audition procedures and scheduling can be found
