Barrett Distribution Plans to Add Solar Panels to Expanding Facility

Barrett Distribution is expanding its Memphis fulfillment center and planning to include the
installation of solar panel technology.
Online PR News – 17-August-2012 Barrett Distribution received approval for a 5-year PILOT (payment in
lieu of taxes) from the Economic Development Growth Engine (EDGE) of Memphis and Shelby County to
expand their Memphis fulfillment center . Barrett requested an additional two years to the PILOT in order
to implement its environmental plans for the facility . These could include green initiatives such as a solar
power array. The extra two years of tax abatement would allow Barrett to invest in this.
Barrett recently invested $2.5 million to install solar panels at a Frankfurt, MA location in a sustainability
effort . These efforts earned recognition when GXT Green, a sustainability firm, named Barrett to its 2012
honor roll in the corporate category. The solar panel installations provide renewable energy and reduce
costs of electricity, and Barrett feels they are worth the investment.
“The calculations for solar in Memphis are more favorable,” said Arthur Barrett, president of Barrett
Distribution. “So we have our eye on repeating (the solar installation) in Memphis.”
EDGE expects that the expansion to the fulfillment center will generate just over $1 million in new tax
revenues, making the project financially profitable for Memphis and Shelby County as well as successful in
pioneering an environmentally friendly energy solution.
