RM50mil jetty boost
The Federal Government will construct a RM50mil jetty at Bagan Ajam in Butterworth to ensure that
fishermen in the area can go out to sea even during low tide.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop said the project would start
after the contractor resolved several issues with a firm involved in coastal reclamation at the site.
More than 300 fishermen in Bagan Ajam and in the surrounding areas are finding it difficult to go to
sea when the tide is low.
“The project has been listed under the 10th Malaysia Plan and it is also in line with the Government’s
aim to upgrade the income of those earning a low salary,” Nor Mohamed said after handing over
cheques totalling RM161,800 to more than 200 fishermen from northern Seberang Prai.
He urged the fishermen to take advantage of the opportunities provided under the Federal
Government’s socio-economic development programmes, so they could boost their income.
Each fisherman received RM200 as part of a poverty eradication programme.
