Principal Northwood Elementary School www.northwoodelementary.com 10200 Wooten Road Roswell, GA 30076 Ph: 770-552-6390 EARLY RELEASE DAY Our first Early Release Day is next Wednesday. All students will be dismissed at 11:15 a.m. Be sure to sign the transportation sheet that came home today and return it Monday so we know how your children are to go home that day. Early Release Day is an opportunity for teachers to be trained in innovative teaching methods, share successful teaching strategies, and develop school-wide improvement initiatives. The dates of future Early Release Days can be found on the Fulton County School website. PLEASE COMMUNICATE! We need parent help in solving dismissal issues. We are teaching the children an orderly, logical, safe dismissal with minimal interruptions. However, one glitch we are discovering is that Daycare Van drivers are not getting the information that your child is going home a different way. The drivers wait, dutifully, for each child because they have no info that your child rode the bus or left with a friend, approved by you. You will be happy to note that we have a very safe record—no lost children—but, parents, please be mindful of coordinating your after school plans for the day with your DayCare commitment. Media Center News The media center will resume Thursday evening hours beginning September 17. The library will be open for Northwood families from 3 to 7 pm each Thursday. Come enjoy the media center and read with your child, choose books together, complete homework, take AR tests, and use the library computers! Mrs. Corrigan will be there each week to help you. ITBS TESTING BEGINS SEPTEMBER 21 On September 21-25, we will be administering the Iowa Test of Basic Skills to our 3rd and 5th grade students. The Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) is a norm-referenced test (NRT). This means that test scores are used to compare the performance of Fulton County students with the performance of students in a national sample who are in the same grade and who took the test at the same point in the school year. These scores provide important information so teachers can plan for instruction. We want to make sure our students perform their best. You can help by making sure your child gets plenty of rest that week and has a good breakfast every morning. It is also important to arrive on time each day so as to be relaxed and prepared for each testing session. Since a quiet and distraction free testing environment is important for a good score, parents/volunteers will not be allowed in the building from 8-11 a.m. each day during testing. This includes parent volunteers, readers, and visitors in ALL grades. If you are coming to assist in a classroom, please come after 11:00. Thank you in advance for your support as we prepare for this very important test. Friday, September 11, 2009 I make a difference at Northwood Elementary PTA News Our official Innisbrook gift wrap sale has ended, however you may still send in your order(s) if you have not done so.   Our first Music Night for 4th and 5th graders is coming up on Friday, October 2. There will be a DJ and fun dance contests and games for all. The $10 entrance fee includes 2 slices of pizza and 1 soda per person. Time is 6:30 to 8:45. Sign up as soon as the flyer comes home because spaces fill up quickly! Note: the dress code for Music Nights is the same as school wear. COAT DRIVE BEGINS! As the weather turns cooler, you may find your child has outgrown that nice new jacket you just purchased last year. In this economy, there may be many children who won’t be able to receive warm clothing for the winter. If you have any gently used outerwear (mostly jackets or coats) that you would like to donate, please bring them to the front office. Some shivering child will be most appreciative! REAPPLY for FREE or REDUCED PRICE MEAL BENEFITS To continue free or reduced price meal benefits for students each household must complete a new application each year. Free and Reduced Meal Benefits will end on September 21, 2009, if the household has not reapplied for school year 2009-2010. If there is an interruption of benefits or the household does not reapply, the household is responsible for payment of meals until the Free and Reduced Application is approved. To help assure continuation of benefits, the household must have a new application turned in to the school cafeteria manager before September 16. Be sure to list all the students in the household on the application. Keep in mind, the application may take up to 10 days to process. If you have any questions, please call the Fulton Country School Nutrition Program Meal Eligibility Desk at (404)305-2220.
