Paragraph:
College students should not be graded on their attendance for a few reasons. First off, college
students are adults now and are able to make their own decisions. If they do not want to show up to a
class they should have the right not to and not have to worry about whether or not their grade will be
affected. However, come test time, if they do not know the material that is their own fault. Second of
all, some students learn better by reading from a text book rather than having a professor sit in the front
of the room and recite it back to them. After all, the students spend hundreds of dollars on books every
semester; they might as well use them. Finally, when students are sick they are being penalized for it.
Instead of staying home and getting better, they feel as though they must go to class. Not only do they
not learn anything because they cannot stay focused, but they put other students and the teacher at risk
of being sick. Some may say that grading students on their attendance is a good thing; that it helps boost
student’s grades if they are not doing so well in the class. However, students should be graded on the
content of the class rather than if they are showing up. How would you feel knowing that your doctor
only became a doctor because he showed up to class on time, not because he knows how to make you
better. Some may also say that it is not fare to the professors that they must show up but the students
don’t have to. Even so, professors are getting paid whether the students show up or not. In a way, it
makes the professor’s life easier if they are getting paid to do virtually nothing. Therefore, a student
being graded on their attendance is just wrong.
