Emotional intelligence enables an individual to learn to acknowledge and understand feelings in oneself and in others, appropriately respond to them by effectively applying the information and energy of emotions in daily life and work. Mayer and Salovey (1993) define emotional intelligence as the ability to monitor one’s own and other’s feelings and emotions to discriminate among them, and to use this information to guide one’s thinking and action. Emotional intelligence involves the ability to perceive, appraise, and express emotions accurately, the ability access and generate feelings when they facilitate thoughts, the ability to understand emotions and use emotional knowledge for intellectual growth.
