The Netop Interface
Ribbon and Tabs: Netop makes use of the now-familiar Microsoft interface ribbon element
introduced in Office 2007. Like many software applications, Netop Vision 7 offers many ways to
achieve the same results. For instance, most of the commands that you will come to rely on in
the tabs are available as well in the toolbar located on the right of the screen. This document
will focus on the tabs but as you work with the software you will develop a preferred workflow
that incorporates the toolbar.

Fig.1 Netop Interface tabs

The ‘Home’ tab opens by default and includes the primary toolkit for teaching and classroom
monitoring. Most of the functionality you will need is located in this tab. The ‘File’ tab, outlined
in blue, is used to configure the software and is beyond the scope of this document.

The ‘View’ contains options and functionality related to the different ways to view student
computers.

The ‘Admin’ Tab contains commands to manage student computers, typically after a lesson has
ended and you would like either to shut down computer or to re-start them.

Using Netop
Turning the Student Workstations On: Booting the ERC workstations is easier than ever. Simply
turning the instructor machine on sends a command to boot up all classroom machines.

Common Comweb functions available in Netop

 Minimized = Similar to Windowed but Netop appears only as
an icon on the bottom of the screen next to the start menu icon.

                               is turned on.

Displaying Videos on Student Machines
Sharing videos from the web, such as those on YouTube or videos you create in Camtasia, is a
great enhancement to the learning experience. If you choose to share these videos on student
machines (demo), make sure you do not show them in “full-screen”. Rather, demo them in the
default window embedded in the web page you are visiting. Demoing in full-screen mode sends
too much data over the network to guarantee stable and smooth video playback. This is a factor
of the amount of network bandwidth required to show video on full-screen multiplied by the
number of machines in the classroom. This is neither a problem with the software nor the ERC.
So when showing a YouTube video, for instance, in demo mode to the class, leave the video in
the default window view; do not toggle to full-screen.

Additional Features
Netop Vision 7 contains a vast array of tools that extend the possibilities of classroom
management far beyond what was possible with Comweb. We recommend that your initial
focus be on reproducing workflows that you relied on when using Comweb and this quick start
guide is designed to assist you. While a comprehensive ‘Beyond the Basics’ training session is
planned for later this fall, we would like to share a few useful features to whet your appetite and
enhance your training experience

Lock Web
There may be times when you want to secure the attention span of your classroom participants.
The Lock Web button, found in the Controlling section of the Home menu will temporarily block
web access for all students by default, or for just the workstations that you have selected in the
thumbnail view window. Note that Lock Web is a toggle meaning that you click the button to
block web surfing and then click the same button again to restore web access. The ‘Stop’ button
does not undo Lock Web.

Start Application
It is possible to launch an application on every student machine (or selected machines) using the
Start Application button found in the Presentation section of the Home menu. A window
containing a drop-down menu of choices appears showing available applications for launch.
[Note: let LITS know if you would like applications added to this list].

Request Name
It may be easier to view the student workstations, chat, or otherwise interact with a student is
you know her or his name. The Request Name button in the Admin Menu will send a prompt
box to each user allowing them to enter their name. If students do not see the box, ask them to
make sure it is not hiding below another application window (which may happen if the user is
working in another application at the time you click Request Name). To reset all names at the
conclusion of a class session, simply click Request Name again. Pop-up windows will launch
again and will time out after 30 seconds; thumbnail names in Netop will return to the default
machine number setting.

Perspective View of Workstations
The Thumbnail view of the ERC workstations is the default view and is available from the View
menu. This view aims to be a mirror of the room layout with the nearest workstations
represented at the bottom of the screen. You may prefer the Perspective View, also found in the
View menu, which offers both a larger view window of the selected workstation as well as
alternative, overlapping, view of the room’s workstations
