WORK AT THE CUTTING EDGE OF HUMAN RIGHTS LAW The Australian Human Rights Commission invites applications from a motivated lawyer or graduate at law for the position of Associate to President Catherine Branson. The successful applicant will be responsible for drafting speeches for the President of the Commission, as well as providing research on local and international developments in human rights law. The successful applicant will also be required to provide general administrative services such as responding to correspondence, arranging appointments, filing and word processing. The successful applicant will also have the opportunity to work with the Commission’s legal section, drafting submissions to Parliamentary Committees and assisting in the preparation of submissions in the Commission’s interventions in court proceedings. Undertake high level legal and policy research and draft speeches for the President. Manage correspondence and draft responses. Maintain effective liaison between the President’s office, the Commissioners and Executive Director, Commission staff, and State/Commonwealth authorities and other human rights organisations. Provide administrative, clerical and secretarial support to the President. Provide secretariat support to the Commission, including taking minutes at Commission meetings. Provide legal research to the Commission’s Legal Section. This may include drafting submissions to various parliamentary committees and statutory authorities and assisting in the preparation of submissions in Commission interventions in court proceedings, including Federal and High Court matters. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Demonstrated high level research and analytical skills. Ability to write clearly and effectively, for a wide range of audiences and in various styles. Ability to work as part of a team with minimal supervision, prioritise work and meet deadlines. Highly developed liaison skills and the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with a diverse range of people and organisations including politicians, senior officials, members of the legal profession and the general public Ability to provide high level executive and administrative support. Understanding of human rights issues and familiarity with Australian and international legislation relating to anti-discrimination and human rights matters.
