Final Project 1 Sean Orme Dr. Murphy Visual Literacy May 3, 2009 FINAL PROJECT: POSTER This project is a poster that is to hang on the wall in a High School Geometry classroom. This year, I started using the illustration of a pizza to convey the idea of the different areas in a circle and it seemed to work well. Therefore, I thought it would be great to have a poster that illustrated it. Contrast: I used contrast in using different fonts to separate the headings from the text and problems. I also used a bold white text in contrast to the darker orange background. Since the orange was not terribly dark, I tried to use thicker letters to make the words more legible. Additionally, I used white lines to contrast with the dark toppings of the pizza. Alignment: The pizza in the middle of the picture messed a lot with the alingment, but, in general, I center aligned most of the text unless it was being pushed around by the pizza. I centered the pizza horizontally across the page, and used conlumns to help align the text. The columns are alinged vertically, as well as the wire around them, and they are spaced equally accrossed the page. I also made sure the headings did not align across columns so that they would not seem connected with each other. Finally, the title is aligned with the outermost columns. Final Project 2 Repitition: I repeated the columns across the page. Showing repetition in their size, color, and design elemetns. I was also consistent in my use of font type and size. I used curved columns to repeat the idea of a circle because that is the topic of the poster. Proximity: For proximity, I left larger gaps between different sextions to separate them. The columns also helped visually separate the sections, as well as the pizza. In the heading I made the outline and the fill separate and moved them slightly askew. This was to give it a “colored in” look that I found more interesting. Finally, I moved the borders of the columns for a more appealing look. Type: I kept the type simple because of the instructional purpose of the poster. I used two different types. One for headings and the other for text/formulas. I used fonts that had more curves to them to emphasize the focus on circles. I did not focus on a highly legible font because the piece is made to get some attention, but I also did not want one that was difficult to read. For this reason, I also made the fonts as large as I could and still be able to fit the data on the page. Shape: I used shape in many ways in this project. As mentioned in many of the previous sections I tried to emphasize round edges to connect everything to the idea of a circle, which is the focus of the piece. Color: I tried to stick to colors that were a part of the pizza. The orange and yellow being reminiscent of the colors of cheese and pizza crust. This also brings the focus to the Final Project 3 multicolored pizza in the center, which will hopefully hold attention long enough to get teenagers interested in the rest of the poster. Depth: I used a drop shadow on the pizza. The outlines on the columns and the title also give a sense of depth because they are out of sync. Space: Space was enclosed by the columns for the intructional part. The space between columns and the edge of the page helped to balance the visual. The space around the title also kept things symmetrical.
