11th May , 2012 Newsletter No. 7
Broadford Secondary College is committed to building a learning community which puts the
student at the centre of an innovative, dynamic and technology rich learning environment
that provides every opportunity for success, self discovery and leadership and that engages
family in their education.
Principal’s Report:
What will you do for your child with your $820.00
Following the Federal budget of Tuesday, Parliament has already endorsed families of secondary school students to receive
$820 per child towards their education. This will be paid into your bank account in June.
Please use this money for what it is intended. It is a great opportunity to:
Cover netbook re-payments
Pay off subject levies and VET costs
Pay for the year 10/11 Ski Camp
Pay for the year 7 camp (later in the year)
Or
Put it aside in a special account to meet future costs.
We came first!
Inter School Athletics Friday 27 April.
Well done to all our competitors and staff on their performance and work at the Southern Ranges Sports. We
achieved our ultimate goal of coming First (and therefore ahead of Mansfield Secondary College). See the article in
this newsletter.
Term Two – the “testing term” – NAPLAN TESTING - this week for years 7 and 9. This occurs over Tuesday to
Thursday with a catch up day on Friday. These results go to the parent and are a “snapshot” of your child’s level of
learning and progress over two years. Please encourage them to do their best.
Parenting Seminar – This Tuesday, May 15 at 7 p.m. at the school. All welcome. Further details in this newsletter.

Senior School News
The senior students fast approaching the midyear exam period. It is imperative that students use this time to ensure
that they are prepared for the upcoming exams. A timetable for each year level is in this newsletter.
As the Year Twelves approach the exam period, it has been decided that interim reports for the Year Twelves will be
sent home at the end of next week. If students are at risk or behind on work I would ask parents to assist in making
sure that students final year is a good and rewarding one.
Any student who fails a unit 3 subject is not able to continue with that subject in second semester and may put
their VCE/VCAL at risk. Any Year Twelve student that fails a unit 3 subject and doesn’t have sufficient units to
successfully gain a VCE/VCAL, will need to be counselled on their continued enrolment at Broadford Secondary
College.
ATHLETICS – 26TH APRIL 2012
On the 26th of April, 80 students took off for Epping Athletics Track to compete against other schools in the Southern
Ranges district. Although Broadford students performed exceptionally well across the board, I have to give special
mention to our year 7, 11 and 12 students, who cleaned up in pretty much all of their events! BSC kids helped fill in
events where they could and supported each other admirably. Due to consistently having competitors in most
events and the exceptional results they produced, Broadford ended up WINNING the overall points competition!
This is a huge result and a return to form since our last victory in 2009! The whole team should be very proud of
themselves and we look forward to taking a strong team to Albury later this year.
The following is a list of students who either placed 1st, 2nd or 3rd in their events, or helped fill in events at the drop of
a hat. They should all be congratulated for their efforts!

BUS TRAVELLERS PLEASE NOTE.
Parents driving their students to school are reminded that students should be dropped off and picked up
at the Pinniger Street entrance to the school, near the gates. NO PARKING at the front of the school
(Snodgrass Street) please.
The bus service is not there to provide transport to get to after-school jobs or sports training. Any bus
traveller who needs to make a “one off” request to change buses needs to give Mrs. Beedall a note
signed by a parent/guardian on the morning of the day of such a request. Be mindful that the answer
may have to be “no”. This requirement is listed on page 9 of the 2012 Information Guide and has been
there for the past 10 years.
REMINDER TO PARENTS - PLEASE DO NOT PARK OR DROP OFF YOUR STUDENTS IN THE BUS
ZONE PARKING AREA – A PARKING FINE WILL BE INCURRED IF PARKING INSPECTORS VISIT

Year 10 News
Various Year 10 students are about to take home the virtual babies as part of our school welfare program. The
majority of interested students in taking the virtual babies home have been girls, although a couple of male students
have indicated they are willing to take on the challenge. They will be fulltime carers to the virtual infants for two
nights and three days. Some Year 10 students have been asked to reflect on their time as ‘virtual parents’, by the
way of keeping a journal and share it in the next newsletter edition. Thank you to the parents of students involved
for their support, with their child taking the babies home. Let’s hope you have some sleep through the nights.
I need to apologise for the incorrect date I published in the last newsletter edition, for the Student Wellbeing Forum.
I had published the Wellbeing program as running on the Dates
Session 1-THURS 3rd May. Intro/overview (incorrect)
Session 2--THURS 10th May. Guest speakers, CASA
Session 3--THURS 17th May.
Session 4--WED 23rd
Session 5--THURS 31st May
Thursday the 3rd May should have been Friday the 4th May. Year 10’s have completed two sessions and seem to be
really enjoying the forums.
Breakfast club is about to begin and the welfare team are asking for helpers , so if any Year 10 students that live
locally, and are able to arrive at school by 8am, it would be appreciated if you could please volunteer to assist.
A reminder to Year 10 students that work experience commences in the last week of term three. If students could
please return their work experience forms to Mr Dennis ASAP.
The Year 10 / 11 snow camp is fast approaching, so students, who have indicated they are going, please finalise your
next payment ASAP. The school has paid for you to go and we need to collect payments to cover cost.
Looking forward to reading the students journal entries with regards to the virtual babies in the coming weeks, and
wishing all the mums a happy Mother’s day for Sunday

assistance are welcome.
NAPLAN TESTING – 15th, 16th and 17th MAY
The NAPLAN government testing for years 7 and 9 is fast approaching. Testing for literacy and numeracy skills will
take place on the 15th, 16th and 17th of May.

Welfare Team
Over the next fortnight, the welfare team will be introducing two more programs to support the students of our
school. The famous Breakfast Club will be kicking off on Wednesdays and Fridays. The Breakfast Club offers a hot
breakfast to all the students of our school. It is run by the students with the support of staff and local community
health volunteers. The Brekky Club is dependent upon community donations, so any offers of financial support would
be greatly appreciated.
We also have the REACH foundation undertaking workshops for our year 8, 9 and 10 year levels. We have integrated
REACH workshops over the past 3 years with great success, encouraging students to be respectful and caring of each
other.
NETBOOK PROGRAM YEARS 7,8 AND 11
A reminder to families who chose Option 2 (Term by Term payment) for the Netbook Program, the
second instalment of $70 was payable by Friday 23 March, $120 for year 11 if your student has a Netbook.
Payment by cash, EFTPOS, credit card (inc. vic phone) is acceptable. If credit card details were supplied
on the Netbook Agreement From, the school will process your payment.
Netbooks Update
Over the past few weeks, several recurring Netbook problems have emerged amongst a small group of students.
The problems include failure to start properly or at all, running very slowly and a failure to recognise moves
between networks.
A pattern is emerging that may be fixed with some simple house keeping by students. Some students are never
shutting down and restarting their Netbooks. While this is a common practice that is usually handled by
portable PC technology, it is also recognised that WINDOWS operates much more efficiently when it is allowed
to close, rest itself and restart on a regular basis.
We are also aware that a small group of students are downloading large numbers of games and videos to their
Netbooks. While the Acceptable Use Policy allows for this, it must be understood that the types of full – function
games such as Halo or Call of Duty place a huge processing burden on the Netbooks which hampers their
performance. They also take up large amounts of disc space.
It must also be noted that ‘Grand Theft Auto’, in its many versions, is very popular amongst students but is
BANNED from being played at school at any time.
Some students are downloading large numbers of movie files and sharing them amongst their friends. Parents
and students should be aware that this may be illegal and breach the copyright of the movie owners. Storing
movie files on Netbooks can also impact their performance if they occupy too much disc space.
Finally, the Department updates all the Netbooks automatically every Tuesday and it has become obvious that
many students are interrupting this process or cancelling the updates. This causes the Netbooks to become
unstable and develop start up problems.
Simple things that students can do to prevent recurring problems -
1. Shutdown the Netbook each night and recharge ready for the next day.
2. Do not interrupt or cancel automatic updates from the department
3. Keep games to a minimum
4. Transfer movies to external media
5. Use the Network Logon icon to access your school server workspace for save your work

TAX FILE NUMBERS
The ATO allows students to apply for a Tax File Number on a simplified form, with a turnaround time of approximately 28 days.
All that is required is for the student to present their Birth Certificate to Mr. Dennis and complete the form. The school then
forwards it to the ATO. Any student over the age of 13 can apply for their Tax File Number.
Students should see Mr. Dennis should they have any questions or wish to apply.
WORK EXPERIENCE YEAR 10 STUDENTS
All year 10 students are required to undertake a weeks’ work experience in 2012. This will occur in the
last week of Term 3, Monday 17 September to Friday 21 September. It is important that students start
investigating opportunities NOW, and consider looking at work placement in an area of career interest.
If students have any questions they must see Mr. Dennis as soon as possible.

Japanese Sister School Visit – Host families required
Students from Katsuta High School will be visiting B.S.C. in term 3. They arrive in Broadford on
Saturday 28th of July, and will be staying for 4 nights. The students are here to practise their English,
learn about Australian culture and to share information about their own culture with others.
Hosting a Japanese student is a fantastic opportunity to learn about Japan and Japanese culture
from a young person’s point of view. It also provides LOTE students with a chance to use their
Japanese in a real and meaningful way.
We need host families from the school community to open their homes to someone from another
culture for 4 nights. You certainly don’t need to be able to speak Japanese to be a successful host.
Patience, curiosity, a sense of humour and a spare bed (or couch) are all that are required. Ability
at charades is also helpful.
Since 2008, the Education Department has required all members of a homestay family over the age
of 18 years to undertake a Working with Children Check (WWCC). This is free for homestay families.
Forms are available from local Post Offices.
If you are interested in hosting this year, please return the slip below to the General Office. If you
would like to know more about the Homestay program and/or the Working with Children Check,
please don’t hesitate to contact me at B.S.C.

Balancing Love & Discipline
A Parenting ProgramThe program is run by Marc des Landes from Familycare in Seymour.
Marc has conducted numerous parenting workshops and worked with adults and children in a counselling capacity. Marc is
highly regarded and has a terrific reputation in this area.
The course is open to all parents and has an emphasis on the important role of the father in establishing sound relationships
with their children.
It is very common these days for fathers to be taking a much more active role in family life. Mothers are also finding that there
are more demands on their time from a financial point of view. Fathers who find themselves more involved in the parenting part
of family life may also find themselves wishing for more options for dealing with the day to day issues that arise in the home.
This course is suitable for all parents who would like to meet with others to explore ways to increase their options in dealing
with the various issues that parents experience while supporting and nurturing their partners and children of all ages.
Parents may attend as a couple, share attendance by alternating nights, or attend alone. It is not necessary to attend
all nights, if you miss one or two, notes from previous sessions will help you catch up.
Some of the topics that have been helpful in previous groups include:
Good communication
Teaching life skills
Issues of discipline
What is normal for kids?
Confronting unacceptable behaviour
How to help your child when they are anxious angry or upset Discovering that others are experiencing
problems almost identical to your own somehow seems to lighten your load.
The course would run in the evening, one nightweek for eight weeks. Dates:
Every Tuesday from May 15 until June 26 & 27
(Two sessions in the last week Tues & Wed)
Time: 7.00pm -9.30pm.
Venue: Broadford Secondary College
In order for the course to go ahead we need to confirm enough participants for the program. Please phone
Familycare during office hours to register your interest Ph 5735 4600
