         Procedure

 1. Begin class by showing the PowerPoint containing information regarding the . Ask the class the
      following questions:
 What product or service is being sold in this advertisement?
 Who is the target audience?
 What images are used to make you want to buy this product or service?
 What words make you want to buy this product or service?
 What is the most memorable thing about this advertisement? Why?
 What is the message the advertiser wants you to remember?

 2. Talk about television advertisements they remember and ask the same questions. Add a question
about the use of sound – how does the music or jingle help to sell the product or service?

 3. Tell the students that their job is to create a commercial for the novel they just read that targets the
group they think would most enjoy reading the book – their peers. They may choose to perform
their commercial live or to record it and show it to the class. Each commercial must include the
      following:
 Visual aide/presentation - video recording, power point, ex.
                The book itself
 A visual in addition to the book (poster, photo, graph etc.)
 A speech which includes reading/quoting part of the book as well as original words
                  and/or thoughts about the book
 A “teaser” – something that makes the prospective reader want to learn more and/or
                  read the whole book.

                                                                                      Anna Ramirez EDR 628
4. Students should think about how the book is already being marketed by the publisher. How is the
product packaged? Look at the cover art and design, the words selected for the title, and the book
jacket. Have they seen this book advertised anywhere else?

5. Other questions to think about when creating commercials:
 What made you read the book in the first place?
 What advertising gimmicks can you use to get people to buy or read the book?
 What message do you want to give?
 How can you give a teaser of the book and still leave the ending a mystery?
 Do you want to create a jingle, artwork or show a scene from the book?
 How do you select a passage from the book? How do you pick a favorite part that does
                    not give away the ending?
 Who would like this book? Why? Do you want to appeal to everyone or just a small
population? How do you reach that population the best?

6. On the day the commercials are due, ask the “audience” to keep track of the books they might want
to read as a result of seeing the commercials. Then ask them to write a brief response to the
following question: What thing or things from the commercial you saw make you want to read this
         book? Explain your answer.

            Cautions and Comments

 Frequent check ins to check on progress of commercials will be necessary. Since the majority of
the preparation for these commercials will be outside of class, it will be necessary to check in
         regularly
 Encourage students to present their book commercials in any way they see fit. There is not a
single RIGHT WAY to do it. They will initially want to do the commercial exactly like the examples

                               SCIENCE FICTION BOOK COMMERCIAL
You are the producer of the newest film coming out this summer, The Giver. Create a book
commercial about your book and try and “sell the book” to your peers.

Your presentation should include some type of visual aide. You may choose to pre record your video

Other questions to think about when creating commercials:
