DISCUSSION PAPER FOR A Euro-CASE ENGINEERING EDUCATION ACTIVITY


Objective
State of the Art and trends of change, European issues (Bologna declaration, Lisbon
strategy)

Why should Euro-CASE embark this activity?
● Engineering Education is a key issue for Euro-CASE academies
● Europe is faced with a large competition from Asia and USA. (400,000 engineers in China
per year)
● Engineering Education plays a key role for the Lisbon objectives, and in terms of
innovation, new markets, quality of life, growth and jobs.
● Euro-CASE, with national engineering academies in 20 European countries, is an
appropriate institution to treat this issue and to develop future-based curricula for engineering
education.

Intended output of Euro-CASE Engineering Education activity
Gather information about current activities in European countries
Improving student exchange
Improving curricula
Specific issues on Engineering Education in Europe compared with USA and Asia
White paper (10-15 pages) Best practice experiences

Project proposal on Engineering Education
If the academies want to embark on a Euro-CASE activity, a group of experts should be
nominated (5-6). Euro-CASE will organise a meeting. The group will draft a project proposal
for consideration of the Executive Committee.

The project proposal should include the following issues:

•   Objective
•   Intended output
•   Reasons for treating the subject
•   Interest of member academies
•   Leading academy
•   Budget, funding, staff support
•   What added value by partner organisations
•   Additional expertise required (
•   Terms of Reference
•   Organisational arrangements
•   Time schedule
•   Target audience
•   Reporting
•   Success criteria
