The Children’s Book Council
The Children's Book Council, Inc. is
the nonprofit trade association of
publishers and packagers of trade
books and related materials for
children and young adults.
The goals of the Children's Book
Council are:
to make the reading and enjoyment
of children's books an essential part
of America's educational and social
goals;
to enhance public perception of the
importance of reading by
disseminating information about
books and related materials for
young people and information about
children's book publishing; and
to create materials to support
literacy and reading encouragement
programs and to encourage the
annual observance of National
Children's Book Week and Young
People's Poetry Week.
The Children’s Book Council
This organization began when Franklin
K. Mathiews, Librarian of the Boy
Scouts of America, created Book
Week in 1919.
This organization was first known as the
Association of Children’s Book
Editors.
In 1999 they created Young People’s
Poetry Week.
CBC is a non-profit trade association.
Members are persons who are U.S.
publishers of children’s literature
and trade materials. Personal
membership are prohibited.

What Can They Do For You?
Assist in the sponsorship of Children’s Book Week and Young People’s Poetry Week.
Materials available for purchase, such as Book Week promotional items and bookmarks.
They create several booklists that are available for reproduction by Media Specialists. They
even produce Graphic Novel and Spanish-language booklists!
Great resource for a Media Specialist to become familiar with the hottest new books and
materials.
A source for children’s literature news and events, including book awards.
They even have information on how to get a children’s book published.

CBC Magazine
CBC publishes a FREE monthly e-magazine called CBC Features.
This magazine is full of great information such as children’s movie
reviews, biographies of children’s authors, “hot of the press” books,
more booklists, and details national literary events taking place.
CBC Features is accessed online by clicking the “CBC Features” icon on
the CBC homepage; a hard copy can also be requested.
