Textbooks: Prentice Hall Literature: World Masterpieces, Prentice Hall Writing and Grammar (class set) Novels: We will read at least one novel this semester – title TBD

Curriculum Units: Literature: The curriculum includes the study of the short stories, non-fiction, poetry and drama, as well as a novel unit. We will be studying literature from the Middle Ages, Medieval, Renaissance, Romantic and Modern period. Writing and Grammar: We will review the writing process, write a personal narrative, practice descriptive and expository writing, practice timed writing, and write using research documents and citations. We will study the parts of speech, parts of a sentence, and usage. Vocabulary: Vocabulary study is ongoing in all units. Study will include a “Word of the Day,” Latin roots, SAT words, and words from the literary selections. Gateway: All students must demonstrate knowledge of the Gwinnett County Academic Knowledge and Skills (AKS) curriculum. Students/parents will be provided a booklet listing each of these AKS by course at the beginning of the school year. Students graduating in 2002 and beyond will need to pass the Gateway Assessment before graduation. The Gateway Assessment will measure students’ ability to write effectively about 9th and 10th grade science and 10th grade social studies. The assessment will be first administered in the spring of the 10th grade year. Students will have several opportunities to retake the test if they are unsuccessful the first time.

Computer/Internet Access: All major papers and assignments must be typed and there will be assignments and projects that require the internet. If you do not have a computer or internet access at home, plan accordingly—computers are available in the media center and in homeroom. I maintain the class website which allows you to view assignments, download handouts (including this syllabus) and notes.

Class Policies and Expectations:
 Anticipate 1. Be on time. (Tardy policy: 1st-reminder, 2nd-warning, 3rd-parent contact & detention, 4th –referral) 2. Bring paper, pen, notebooks, and books every day. Participate 1. Complete class work every day 2. Contribute to class discussion. 3. Use the restroom and see counselors before or after class or school. (20/20 rule) Cooperate 1. Be respectful to the teacher and other students. (No profanity or rude behavior. We are
here to lift each other up, not bring each other down).



2. Follow school policies regarding NO food, drinks, gum, hats or electronic devices in the classroom or school.
 Cheating will result in a zero. Copying homework is cheating. 1st: 0 on assignment, Parent Contact, and Warning. 2nd: Referral. SAP 27  Homework is due at the beginning of the class period. “Late” work is work done as a result of an excused absence only. If a student is present and does not have his homework, it is a zero.  Late Papers/Projects: For each day that a major paper/project is late up to three days, you will lose a letter grade (10 points). Past the three days, you will receive a zero.  ABSENCES & MAKE-UP WORK: When a student has an excused absence, he/she must makeup any work missed within five school days or according to a plan devised by the teacher for an extension of this five day period. It is the student’s responsibility to see that this is done at the teacher’s convenience, outside the regular school day. Students who are suspended out of school will be given their assignments upon their return to school. It will be the student’s responsibility to ask the teacher for assignments which were missed. Go to the teacher website for information and assignments; it is updated frequently. The five day rule does not apply to long-standing due dates on assignments, such as term papers, projects, and on-going reading and in some cases tests/exams. It is generally expected that the student would turn in the assignment on his/her first day back to school. Any test or quiz not made up by the assigned date will remain a zero.  Heading: All papers and assignments must have the MLA heading in the upper left corner. Papers without this heading will not receive full credit.
