3 Minutes Speech
What makes Captain Hook lose in the duel? Keith Chan Introduction Do you still remember the scene in which Peter Pan and Captain Hook were fighting on the boom on Hook’s pirate boat? Let us recall some of the details of that scene. The duel began when Peter Pan flew just in time to Captain Hook’s pirate ship in order to save Wendy and the others. In order to compete fairly, Pan has agreed not to fly in the duel. Hook was initially in the upper hand until Pan took advantage of the sail and wrapped Hook up in a split second as Hook was unconscious. At last, Hook was being thrown into the sea and landed right into the crocodile’s jaws. In this speech, I would try to analysis the reasons behind Captain Hook’s loss in the duel. Body • Arrogance, sense of superiority Hook simply believed that he was the greatest pirate in the world and could easily defeat anyone including his tough enemy Peter Pan and especially when Pan lost his greatly advantage over himself as he couldn’t fly. This sense of superiority as a result of over-confidence has yet made Hook failed to realize his weaknesses. Imagine a tennis player who believes he is the best in the world and fails to understand his own weaknesses and his opponent’s strengths would you think he is likely to win the match? The same rule applies in the duel. • Failed to take precautions Although Hook was able to take lead using his saw at first, he failed to predict any possible upcoming revenge by Pan and therefore was not prepared when Pan took revenge. This is just like a student sitting for an exam by memorizing only the most important sections of the syllabus without realizing the fact that the teacher might also set questions based on other topics been taught. By failing to take suitable precautions left Hook with no other options but to surrender. • Carelessness It couldn’t have been possible for Pan to wrap Hook up if Hook was highly attentive. In critical moments, Hook has failed to observe abnormal acts of Pan giving Pan a chance to take revenge. • Lack of ‘instant talent’ to reverse the situation Unlike Pan who was able to reverse the situation from adversity to gaining the upper hand, Hook failed to execute timely, innovative yet practical plans to regain his vantage. Basically, he has given up the moment when Pan took revenge. Conclusion Given the above analysis, I have concluded that Hook lost in the duel finally as he was too arrogant, failed to take precautions, being careless and lacked ‘instant talent’ to take revenge. The reason why Hook failed might not sound significant to us, but the implications behind, like any other fairy tales, demonstrate how we should act when facing challenges. Always remember to be humble, well prepared, highly attentive and adaptive. Thank you.
