Allergies

• Loss of biodiversity in food supply =
  increase in food allergies

• Allergic reactions more prevalent
  with GM foods
Cancer & Degenerative Diseases

• Several GM approved products
  involve herbicides that are
  carcinogenic
  – Bromoxynil (transgenic cotton)
  – Glufosinate (aka RoundUp)

  Used on GM soybeans, corn & canola.
   GM done to plant makes plant resistant
   to herbicide. “RoundUp Ready”
Cancer & Degenerative Diseases

• Monsanto’s rBGH = genetically
  produced growth hormone injected
  into dairy cows (FDA approved)
• Scientists warned that rBGH
  increases IGF-1 (potent hormone),
  which is linked to a 400-500% higher
  risk of human breast, prostrate, &
  colon cancers
• rBGH = banned in EU, Australia, &
  Canada…still allowed here.
Chug it, Chug it.
Viral Illness Threats

• Superviruses - viruses can mix w/ genes
  of other viruses (including HIV), giving
  rise to more deadly viruses
• Serious threat: Often times disease-
  causing viruses are isolated & injected
  into plant DNA after being “crippled”.
• Plants have incorporated new DNA and
  “uncrippled” the virus DNA, allowing the
  viral DNA to become widespread.
Bacterial Illness

• Antibiotic threat via Plants
  – Resistant qualities of GM bacteria in
    food can be transferred to other
    bacteria in environment & body

  – Already have problems with antibiotic-
    resistant bacteria…GM bacteria
    exacerbate the problem
Birth Defects

• No evidence of impact on human
  evolution from ingesting GM foods or
  on long-term health impacts

  – rBGH in cows causes increase in birth
    defects & shorter life spans…what
    does it do to us?
Toxicity

• First time genes that produce a toxic
  pesticide have been in a food’s
  cells…what might the long-term
  health effects be?

                •What might happen to
                 the plants--a real life
                   attack of the killer
                       tomatoes?
Regulation & Labelling Problems
• NO regulated health safety testing
  – FDA only requests firms conduct their own tests of
    new GM products
  – Monsanto: “Our interest is in selling…assuring its
    safety is the FDA’s job”

• Companies not required to label GM foods or
  foods made with GM foods
  – Violates right to know what’s in food
  – Nearly impossible to avoid GM foods
The Benefits of GM Foods

• Yes…there are some.
  – Foods can be enhanced to contain
    essential nutrients & minerals =
    healthier diets & healthier people
  – Reduction in diet-related diseases
    • Ex: Fat content can be targeted &
      reduced in certain foods to help reduce
      # of cases of obesity

    BUT AT WHAT COSTS? IS IT WORTH IT?
