More than 19,000 candidates to run for local
council elections

preliminary statistics show that the overall number of
applicants to run in the local council elections has reached
19,313 at the level of provinces and districts, with the
exception of Hajja province, a source at the Supreme
Commission for Elections and Referendum (SCER) said.
“The number of candidates for local elections at the level
of districts has reached 17319, of whom 7585 are
independent candidates, 5249 belong to the General
People’s Congress (GPC), 3140 Islah Party, 763 Yemeni
Socialist Party (YSP), 165 Nasserite Unionist Party
(NUP), and 91 belong to Ba’ath Socialist Party (BSP).
The rest belong to other political parties,” SECER
Information Officer, Abu al-Janadi told the
almotamar.net.
At the level of provinces, al-Janadi went on to say, there
are 1994 candidates, of whom 1242 are independent, 344
belong to the GPC, 226 Islah Party, 74 YSP, 14 NUP, and
27 belong to BSP. The rest of the candidates represent
other political parties.
In the last day of the Applications Reception period, the
number of women candidates has reached 164; most of
them belong to the GPC.
According to sources, the increase in the number of
female candidates is attributed to President Ali Abdullah
Saleh’s call to support women candidates representing
various political parties.
