GOALS


MISSION

   -    To create a mission that subtly introduces the player into the world and assists them with learning and
        utilizing the basic actions they will need in the game.
   -    To make a lasting impression on the player of the tremendous destructive power of the enemies in this game
        that will last with them to the final level.

ESSENTIAL INFORMATION


SETTING
                                         rd
   -   This fictional game would be a 3 person
       adventure/action game that draws influence from
       Japanese Monster movies and Superhero Fiction. The
       setting could be compared to the fictional Tokyo in
       the classic movie Akira. The game play would be a mix
       of Tomb Raider’s exploration and puzzle solving /
       Shadow of the Colossus’ large scale boss battles / and
       Star Wars: The Force Unleashed Force power system.



   -   “First Encounter” takes place in a tall damaged office building. Large sections of the buildings have been
       destroyed and whole sections of floors are gone. Broken glass and debris are everywhere. A part of the
       building is on fire so visibility is ever decreasing as the smoke filters up from the lower floors. The player
       wakes up in the men’s washroom 3 floors from the top of the building after the initial attack occurs.

BOSS MONSTER (BM)



                                                                 - The Boss monster is a Lovecraftian being of
                                                                 immense stature. A writhing mass of tentacles it has
                                                                 surrounded the skyscraper and began to feast on the
                                                                 people in the building much like the mythical kraken
                                                                 of old sailors tales. At the current point in the story its
                                                                 motivations are unknown but when it does encounter
                                                                 our protagonist it seeks to consume him.

                                                                 - It is a slow beast as its eyes are located on several
                                                                 special tentacles so it must first spot its prey and then
                                                                 shoot a grasping tentacle to bring its prey to its
                                                                 gaping maw. The player can use this delay to their
                                                                 advantage to elude capture and to drive the beast
                                                                 into damaging itself.




PLAYER GOALS

   -   Stage 1: Navigate a ruined hallway overcoming several obstacles to reach the Office Floor
   -   Stage 2: Cross the debris strewn Office Floor while avoiding the Boss Monsters attacks
   -   Boss Fight: Utilize the dangerous electrical generators around you to defeat the Boss Monster

STAGE 1



-   Player begins level around (1)

-   Player navigates to (2) where a tooltip
    to come onto the screen indicating
    what button to use to jump over the
    debris in front of them.

-   Tooltips appear at every different
    part of Stage 1.

-   After rounding the corner; the floor
    collapses underneath the player (3).
    This creates a pit the player is unable
    to currently escape from. They must
    utilize the interact button to begin
    pushing large crates around to create a ladder to escape from the pit.

-   (4) Once they have cleared the pit the player comes to a ladder made from debris that they utilize to access a
    higher level.




                                                                         -   (5) At the next floor a large amounts of
                                                                         debris have fallen down creating a tunnel.
                                                                         The player must crouch and navigate the
                                                                         tunnel to get to (6) and finish Stage 1.

                                                                         -    At the midway point of crawling through
                                                                         the tunnel there will be two branches to the
                                                                         path but as the player crawls through the
                                                                         debris will shift and block one path. This
                                                                         should startle the player and help keep the
                                                                         mood tense.

-   Once they’ve come through the length of the tunnel they will encounter a pipe (6) they can climb up to make it
    up to Stage 2

STAGE 2

-    (7) Cinematic plays of office worker crouching behind box. Worker runs to other side of room. Close up on Boss
Monster eye seeing him. Tentacle lashes through the building, grabs the office worker and drags him, screaming, out
of the building. The player begins to head back the way they came when a voice chimes in. Voice is female and she is
communicating telepathically to the player.




-   (8) Tutorial: Player looks around to find the location of the voice.

Unknown Female (UF): “ ‘Character Name’ watch out! That monster is hunting you. There is no time to explain. You
must get to the roof. Watch for his eyes. If they spot you, you’re done for. To look around...”


-   The voice educates the player on how to lean against vertical surfaces and use the camera to watch the eyes of
the Boss Monster.

-    (9) Player’s now must cross a debris strewn office floor to get to the stairs that will allow them rooftop access.
This will be there first encounter with the Boss Monster and a chance for the player to learn the BM’s patterns and
attacks.

-   (9)
             o    Red Area: The red area indicates floor space the BM’s eyes can spot the player in. If a player is
                  spotted a tentacle will quickly shoot out across the floor, grab them, and begin dragging the player
                  towards the edge of the floor. If the player is grabbed they must rotate their left thumb stick in a
                  clockwise or counter clockwise fashion to drag themselves either left or right towards cover. If they
                  reach a wall they will grab a handhold and kick free.

                  Once they break free they have a temporary grace period to find cover and catch their breath. In the
                  event the tentacle successfully drags them to the edge of the floor they will have to start at the
                  beginning of the map again.

                  If the player is dragged all the way to the ledge of the building they will be freed by a helicopter
                  attacking the boss. The player will be blown towards the beginning and must start over. They will
                  lose a portion of their health in this process.

             o    Blue Area: Blue areas are safe zones for players that provide them opportunities to watch the BM’s
                  eyes and to plan when to attempt their next move.

             o    Path A: The safest path for the player to follow. It keeps the player at the farthest distance from the
                  BM’s tentacles and is quite efficient.
             o    Path B: Path B is very comparable to Path A except it has more risk by putting the player in range of
                  the small side tentacles which have a quicker eye that has less range to cover.
             o    Path C: The most efficient path available. They player takes a risk by staying close to the monster
                  and must be a proficient at timing their movements to avoid the tentacles.
             o    Path D: The most dangerous path a player can take. By running out in the open, so close to the
                  ledge, the player risks being easily spotted and grabbed.

-   (10) Upon crossing the room the player will reach a stairwell. This provides an opportunity for the player to catch
        a breath before heading on to the BM.



BOSS


STAGE 1

-   (11) Cinematic: BM’s tentacles erupt up and form walls
around the edge of the building. A tentacle comes crashing down
and the player dodges it. The tentacle destroys one of the corner
power relays causing a surge of electricity in the central generator.

UF: “We can’t land until those tentacles are down. Look around
you for some way to stun it.

Camera pans over from the broken relays to the central
generator.

-    (12) Player must trick the Boss into destroying the 3 other power
relays. The boss has three attacks in stage 1 and will attempt to knock the
player unconscious. The player must draw the boss into attacking the
player near a power relay and before the attack hits dodging out of the
way. Once all 3 power relays are destroyed the BM battle moves onto
stage 2.

The BM has 3 main attacks that follow a rotating pattern the player can
learn. Attacks focus on where the player is currently standing upon the
initiation of the attack.

Slam: A large shadow covers the area around the player. As the BM’s
tentacle comes down the shadow becomes smaller indicating to the player
where it will slam down. Easily dodge able using the techniques the player
learned in Stage 2. If the player is hit by the tentacle they take damage and are stunned for a short period.

Horizontal thrust: One of the BM’s eyeball tentacles comes floating in. Upon spotting the player it will coil up like a
spring and shoot across the rooftop. The player must wait for the tentacle to wind up and then dodge as the tentacle
moves quickly and if they are too late they will be hit and sustain a large amount of damage.

Homing tentacle: A special tentacle with a grasping claw. It will slowly follow the player around the level for a time.
The player must evade it or it will catch them and throw them up into the air causing them to take damage and be
stunned for a long time. The player can grab debris to use as a weapon against the homing tentacle.

Tooltip appears on screen when the player starts the Boss Battle indicating for them to use the action button to
pick up debris and to use the action button again to attack with it.


STAGE 2

                                                                              -   (13) Player must get boss to attack the
                                                                              central generator. Upon attacking it the
                                                                              Boss Monsters tentacle is stuck there for a
                                                                              period of time. The player then spears the
                                                                              boss’ tentacle into the generator, trapping
                                                                              it.

                                                                              The player can spear a tentacle by
                                                                              approaching it with debris in hand. An icon
                                                                              indicating to press the actionbutton will
                                                                              appear above the players head when they
                                                                              are close enough. This will engage the
                                                                              cinematic of the player spearing and
                                                                              locking on of the BM’s tentacles to the
                                                                              main generator.

The Boss’ attacks and cycles speed up in response to being damaged by the player; He also gains another attack:

Spitter Tentacles: These tentacles will stay near the edge of the maps and shoot sticky goop at the player. If the player
steps in the goop or is hit by it their movement speed is halved for a period.


BOSS DEFEAT

-   (14) When four tentacles are trapped the
player must quickly run and release the resistors on
the main generators. This causes a flood of
electricity to surge up and kill the boss. Upon killing
the boss a cinematic of the player escaping the
tower in a helicopter starts.

CODING

Stage 1

    -     No special coding needed. Minor scripting and available code can be used

Stage 2

    -     Eye Tentacle
              o Eye Tentacle will roam around the exterior acting as a security camera. Upon spotting the player it
                  will initiate a grabber tentacle to go after the player.

    -     Grabber Tentacle
              o Upon being initiated by the Eye Tentacle code the grabber tentacle runs through its animation. If the
                  head of the grabber tentacle interacts with the player’s collision it will initiate the grab animation
                  and begin dragging the player towards the edge of the building.
              o Once the player is being dragged towards the building the breaking free mini game starts. The
                  tentacle code must change the players location based on the rotational direction the player is using.
                  Upon the player colliding with a grab able object the code will play the break free animation and
                  release the player to their standard state. If the player reaches the ledge the play the helicopter
                  attack animation and transport player to the beginning of the level.

Boss

    -     Attack Code:
              o The Boss animations and act on a timed cycle that changes throughout the progression of the battle.
                  Code will deal with initiating the attacks, inflicting damage, playing the proper animations and
                  maintaining the cycle.
