A Howard County Youth Conservation Corps Program

Restoring the Environment and Developing Youth (READY) OVERVIEW:

READY is a partnership among Howard County, the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay, and
People Acting Together in Howard that will provide a select team of 25-30 qualified young adults
real-world job experience and new environmental protection knowledge. These young adults will
work hard and learn hard during the first wave of the project, from 18 June through 10 August
2012. Along with the outdoor work to install rain gardens, the young adults will also get regular
training on topics such as:

  • The ecology of the Chesapeake Bay and why watershed protection is key to its health
  • Native plants of Maryland
  • Soils and hydrology
  • Measuring and monitoring watershed functions
  • Rain garden design and other means to capture runoff
  • Ways to describe their experience for their resumés and other job skills coaching

At the end of their experience, each person will be responsible for making presentations to their
sponsoring organizations about what they did and learned. The team will also make a formal
presentation to the County Executive, Ken Ullman, and other key people. Each person will take
the leadership within their communities to organize regular maintenance of the rain gardens. It is
our hope that these young adults will continue as evangelists within their communities, to link
their faith with the responsibility for caring for the environment, and that this momentum will help
them envision for themselves new opportunities for work as they launch their careers.

We are planning ways to connect these young adults to business owners and other future career
opportunities related to their summer environmental job experience.

SUMMARY OF ROLES
There are two roles for young adults in the project: Crew Leader and Crew Member. During the
project Crew Members will be divided into work crews that 4 − 5 Crew Leaders will guide. The
crews will work in parallel on several installations.

In general, Crew Leaders will possess demonstrated leadership and motivational skills. Typically
Crew Leaders will have had some prior job experience.

Installing rain gardens is outdoors work which will happen during the summer. Much of the work
will be labor intensive, including digging, planting, and heavy lifting, so good physical condition

— and strong mental fiber — are expected of the young adults. We will make all best efforts to
ensure a safe experience for the young adults. In the end the young adults should be able to
proudly point out what they have accomplished, in what they have learned as well as what they
have concretely done to protect the environment while also beautifying the land on which they
have worked.

ROLE: Crew Member

Job Description
The key responsibility of the Crew Member is to install rain gardens, on-time, in-quality, and
done safely. Through the process of installing rain gardens at various sites, a Crew Member will
also gain insights into why rain gardens are important, how they work, and where they fit in the
larger picture of watershed protection. A Crew Member is assigned to a Crew Leader and works
with 4 − 5 other Crew Members as a unit to install rain gardens. Crew Members receive training
on the job, including the specifics of installing rain gardens complemented with additional
classes and discussions about related topics. As this is a paid full-time role, the Crew Member is
expected to behave responsibly and with civility, and exercise maturity in relating to others.

Crew Member will work 35 – 40 hours per week. The duration of work is 8 weeks. As with all
team members, Crew Leaders make a commitment to contribute to planned follow-up activities,
to spur their sponsoring organizations to maintain their rain gardens, and where possible to drive
others, at least within their sponsoring organization, toward understanding the value of taking
care of their environment.

  • Howard County resident
  • Good health (much of the work involves physical labor such as shoveling, using a pick-
      axe, and lifting)

Preferred
