Study.

3. Module descriptions
This documentation complements and describes the modules and courses presented in the
Conditions of Study.

It describes the modules of the field of studies of Information Science as part of the Master
studies (as a major or minor field of studies) of the Faculties of the Humanities of the University
of the Saar and as part of several fields of studies leading to a diploma degree (as a
complementary subject). The modules mostly comprise several courses which are called
module elements.

The credits and the hours per week (SWS) noted with the modules represent the total of the
credits and SWS of the module elements that are part of the respective module (lectures,
exercises, seminars ...). The descriptions of the module elements show the module element’s
credits and SWSes.

As long as it is not explicitly noted otherwise with the module elements, the modules’
properties and values are inherited by the module elements. In other words: the values given
with a module element replace the values given by the module. This is e.g. true for the
iterativity property. By iterativity this plan refers to the frequence and the cycle of a module or
course (semester, year).

If the successful assessment of a module element (e.g. an exercise) entails the granting of
credits for an other credit element (e.g. the lecture linked to it) this is made explicit by pointing
to the respective module element.

By admission criteria (there may be more than one sequence of criteria) the following
properties - separated by a ‚+’ - are meant (in the given order):

- aspired degree: (ALLE = all; INFW = Information Science, ALLD = all fields of studies
leading to a diploma; INFB = Bachelor in Computer Science; HOKU = Historically oriented
  cultural sciences ...
- degree variant: (MHF = master, major; MNF = master, minor; MHN = master, major and
minor; DEF = complementary subject (diploma); ALL = all variants)
- conditions of examination (year of coming into force ; where = ‘0000’: all)
- eligible subject (W), compulsory subject (P) or eligible compulsory subject (WP)
- Part of studies (1 = basic studies, 2 = advanced studies; 3 = basic or advanced studies),
- specialization or field of studies (focal point) (cf. also the Conditions of Study):

      E Introduction
GT Basic Studies: fundamentals and basic methods
      GP Basic Studies: information practice
      Q Basic Studies: cross-section fields
B Basic Studies: basic qualifications in information technology
H1 Main studies, focal point 1 (information management / knowledge management)
H2 Main studies, focal point 2 (specialized information)
H3 Main studies, focal point 3 (mass media information)
H4 Main studies, focal point 4 (information industry)
K Colloquium (for main course students)
P Accompanying course for internships (for students in first and second part of
     studies)

The person responsible for the modules is the institution’s representative (3051501).

                                                  Course cycle
The courses follow a 4-semester cycle, i.e. a module and its constituting courses are offered in a
fixed 4-semester cycle. The obligatory courses are offered in a 2-semester cycle.

In the following all courses on offer are presented in two variations in each case giving
examples for major and minor fields of (master) studies. The variants guarantee that the studies
may be completed in the standard period of study. The students’ work load per semester and
study year is calculated in such a way as to make possible major and minor studies in
combination with further studies of the master programme in consideration of the ECTS
framework.
