Book in GALLIUM schedule. No patient prep. Ask for dates of chemotherapy, prior and future and
record this in the notes.
Patient is injected on first day (15 min), and then scanned 3 days later. Scan takes 2 hours.
1. Diagnosis, evaluation, and follow-up of malignancies, particularly Hodgkin’s Disease, Non
Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and Burkitt’s lymphoma. Additional tumors, which are gallium avid,
include lung carcinoma, melanoma, hepatocellular carcinoma, sarcomas, testicular tumors,
multiple myeloma, head and neck tumors, and neuroblastoma.
2. Diagnosis, evaluation, and follow-up if inflammatory processes.
A. Whole body survey to localize source of fever in patients with Fever of Unknown Origin
B. Diagnosis of osteomyelitis and/or disc space infection. Ga-67 is preferred over labelled
leukocytes for disc space infection.
C. Detection of pulmonary and mediastinal inflammation/infection especially in the
D. Evaluation and follow-up of active lymphocytic or granulomatous inflammatory processes such
as sarcoidosis or tuberculosis.
E. Evaluation and follow-up of drug-induced pulmonary toxicity (e.g., Bleomysin, Amiodarone).
RADIOPHARMACEUTICAL: Ga-67 citrate
DOSE: 10 mCi
Organ receiving the largest radiation dose = Lower Large Intestine = 0.74 rads/mCi
Effective dose = 0.444 rem/mCi
Lactation and pregnancy are contraindications. Breast-feeding should be discontinued 2-4 weeks following
the gallium injection.
1. Treatment with iron preparations, chelation therapy (Deferoxamine) can interfere with gallium
2. Last course of chemotherapy should have been at least 3 weeks ago. Chemotherapy can decrease
gallium uptake. It is best to wait as long as possible after chemotherapy and to do the scan just
prior to the next course of therapy. Before doing the injection, let the doctor know if these
guidelines are not met.
Time of imaging depends on clinical indication (see below).
Whole body images are taken from top of head to mid thigh, with the arms up over the head.
3 SPECT images are to be performed starting at mid ear for the first spin, and ending at mid thigh
(or below inguinal nodes) for 3rd spin.
See below for special views.
Siemens Ecam: Medium Energy Collimator
Planar: WB Acquisition protocol
Spect : 64 x 64 ,128 stops / 20 sec stop.
Static : 5 min images (128 x 128 )
ADAC Forte8: WB Ga67 acquisition protocol.
SPECT 64x64, 128 stops, 20 sec/stop.
Delayed statics 300 sec/image, 128x128
