Thank you for your interest in volunteering at Micah Ecumenical Ministries. You will be a vital part of doing justice, loving kindness, and walking humbly with God. Your volunteerism will allow us to put more resources towards the direct care of our homeless brothers and sisters. Individual and group volunteers are welcome at Micah Ministries. Because of the sensitive nature of our work, age requirements are often necessary. To learn more, please contact Alice Cates at 540-479-4116 x15 or catesalice@gmail.com Current Individual Volunteer Needs: Front Desk Hospitality Volunteer Welcomes guests as they arrive at the Hospitality Center and connects them to the person or resources of which they are in need. Specific Tasks: Check guests in on the computer, Sort and hand out mail, answer the front desk telephone, help to connect guests to the appropriate resources Time Commitment: one 2.5-3 hour shift per week (this is a set-schedule position). Current shifts available: Mondays 11:30am-2pm; Tuesdays 11:30am-2pm; Thursdays 11:30am-2pm; Fridays 7:30-9am. Age Requirements: Must be at least 18 years of age Qualifications: The ideal volunteer in this position enjoys working with people, is comfortable using the computer system, and is able to think on his or her toes. For confidentiality reasons, this position is not open to current or former Micah guests. Training Required: Attendance at a volunteer orientation, computer and confidentiality training on our system, and on-the-job training. Clothing Closet Volunteer Sorts through clothing donations and assists guests in selecting appropriate clothing items. Specific Tasks: Sort, fold, label and hang clothing donations, help guests to select appropriate clothing for their day, check out guests when they’ve made their selections. Time Commitment: one 2-2.5 hour shift per week (this is a set-schedule position). Current shifts available: Tuesdays 9:30-11:30am; Wednesdays 9:30-11:30am; Wednesdays 11:30am- 2pm Age Requirements: Must be at least 17 years of age Qualifications: The ideal volunteer in this position enjoys working with people, and enjoys sorting clothing. This position is not open to current Micah guests. Training Required: Attendance at a volunteer orientation and on-the-job training. Respite Home Keepers Specific Tasks: Provide light housekeeping, occasional meal preparation and visit with the residents at the Residential Recovery Home. Time Commitment: one 2-2.5 hour shift per week (this is a set-schedule position). Current shifts available: Flexible. Contact Alice to discuss times. Age Requirements: Must be at least 18 years of age Qualifications: The ideal volunteer in this position is very independent and flexible. He or she must be able to see what needs to be done and do it with limited direction. This position is not open to current or former Micah guests. Training Required: Attendance at a volunteer orientation and on-the-job training. Current Group Volunteer Needs: Meal Support Meal Support is an opportunity for groups to provide breakfast for our homeless neighbors. Breakfast can consist of anything from eggs and bacon to pancakes to cereal to breakfast casseroles and need to serve as many as 50. Groups are responsible for providing the food, cooking, serving, and cleaning up. This volunteer opportunity is available on most Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Volunteer groups of no more than 6 are asked to arrive at 7am to begin preparations. Breakfast is served from 8:00-9:00am.
