ACADEMIC ENGLISH - GRADE 7
Seventh Grade Academic English is a blend of reading, writing, vocabulary and grammar. Academic
English is a student-centered environment that reinforces previous learning and fosters the exploration and
understanding of new material. Regarding homework, effort is the key; mistakes can be part of the learning
process, but a lack of effort will affect a student's grade.
Literature- Through short stories, poems, and novels, a thematic approach explores the individual and
society. The focus is on comprehension and interpretation. An effort to foster higher order thinking skills, to
make inferences, to formulate opinions and to draw conclusions based on facts is stressed. The Academic
English student can expect:
to participate in literature circles
to read and analyze short stories and poetry
to read and two teacher directed core novels:
The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle
Writing- The writing program is mostly literature based and will include expository writing, and creative
writing pieces. Care will be given to build upon past learning before expanding into new areas of writing
expertise. There will be opportunities for individual conferences to facilitate deeper understanding of each
Grammar Usage and Mechanics are part and parcel of the writing program not stand alone units. Style,
organization and content are addressed and nurtured through the student's own writing.
Vocabulary- The vocabulary curriculum in 7th grade is a component of the English course designed to
allow students to expand their vocabulary understanding by identifying word meanings, explaining context
clues, connecting to the world around them and analyzing word structure.
Independent Reading- Uninterrupted, Sustained, Silent Reading will take place during English class every
other week. During this time, students read silently and complete 8 book talks (2 per marking period) by
the end of the year. The penalty for not completing the required 2 book talks per marking period is a 10
point deduction from the final marking period grade.
