COUNTRY MUSIC NEWS: Aldean, Jason --- Jason Aldean’s fifth studio album hasn’t hit shelves yet, but it’s already off to a racing start. The upcoming record’s lead single, “Take A Little Ride” debuted at No. 19 on the country chart, making it Aldean’s highest debut single to date. And Billboard predicts that the single’s brisk sales will make history as the biggest debut ever for a digital song by a male country artist. Download projections for “Take A Little Ride” are approaching 200,000. Aldean has been selling tickets to his “My Kinda Party” tour like hotcakes, selling out every date on the show so far including his first ever stadium sell-out show in Columbus, Ohio. American Idol --- American Idol alumni Scotty McCreery and Kelly Clarkson are weighing in on who they think should fill the two judging vacancies on the show. -Scotty tells OnTheRedCarpet.com, "I like to see artists -- I'm glad that Jennifer [Lopez] and Steven [Tyler] were there, because they were in the business, they knew what we were feeling on stage. I don't know if I could pick one artist... Maybe from country music...Garth Brooks would be cool. It'd be cool to see him." -Kelly thinks Carrie Underwood's college journalism background would make her a good choice. She tells Us Weekly, "She can have that face…that bluff face! She can put that on! She would be good.” Bates, Greg --- In his debut hit single "Did It for the Girl," Greg Bates sings about what he will do, but there is one thing he won't do for the girl -- drama. He says that he's a pretty easygoing guy, and "I just don't need that in my life. And that's always been a big turn-off for me." Bentley, Dierks --- Dierks Bentley returns to the top of the country singles chart this week for the 10th time in his career with his latest hit, “5-1-5-0.” The tune hit No. 1 on both the Billboard and Mediabase/Country Aircheck charts, after inching its way up through the Top 5 over the past few weeks. And it’s no wonder, because Dierks fans love the tune – especially at his live shows. “People are doing the hand signals 5-1-5-0 and people [are] wearing the t-shirts,” Bentley says. “I keep on getting handcuffs thrown up on stage … I’m not really sure how that ties into the song, but I got a pair of like handcuffs tossed up the other night that had like little like pink feathers wrapped around them! It’s funny. The song’s definitely taken a life of its own, and that’s what you want. You want people to hear it and just bring as much out of it as they possibly can.” Chesney, Kenny --- With Kenny’s Chesney’s “Come Over” climbing to No. 2 this week on the Country Singles Charts, the song was certified gold, with sales in excess of 500,000. Reaching this milestone in just over nine weeks marks the fastest Gold Single certification of Chesney’s career. The song is on Chesney’s new disc, “Welcome to the Fishbowl. The “Brothers of the Sun” Tour, with Chesney and Tim McGraw, made an emotional stop at Denver’s sold out Sports Authority Field at Mile High Stadium. Chesney took a moment before singing “I Go Back” to address Friday’s tragedy in Aurora, saying, “Me and my road family are just like the rest of the nation, hurting with this city tonight. We love you, and we’re with you, and if you guys will let us, we want to let music start to heal this town just a little bit tonight.” Later in the show, he referenced Denver Broncos Coach John Fox and quarterback Peyton Manning as he introduced “Boys of Fall,” and they walked on stage to an ovation that was deafening. Love and Theft --- Today is a big day for Love and Theft’s Stephen Barker Liles and Eric Gunderson with the release of their self-titled debut album featuring “Angel Eyes.” The new album has 11 tracks, five of which had one or both of Love and Theft as co-writers. For this album, Eric and Stephen teamed up with longtime Nashville producer Josh Leo – who’s done work with Alabama, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, and others. Moore, Kip --- Kip Moore was offered scholarships in both basketball and golf before choosing a career in music. -His debut album is called Up All Night. -Kip was born in Tifton, Georgia. -His first gig was playing at the Mellow Mushroom in Valdosta, Georgia. -He'll soon join another Moore -- Justin Moore as they open shows for Eric Church. Pickler, Kellie --- Kellie Pickler dressed in a '40s-style two-piece bathing suit for the cover girl on Maxim's Salute to the Military issue. Inside, Kellie talks about her involvement in the USO. She says, "My grandfather is a retired Marine, and I've always had a great deal of respect for anyone who serves our country. It really does take someone special to sacrifice everything." Twain, Shania --- Shania Twain appears in her first commercial promoting her Caesars Palace residency in Las Vegas. A bellhop pushes carts with leopard print luggage and guides a white horse through the lobby. Twain smiles at her entourage and takes off her giant sunglasses in slow motion. Celine Dion also appears in the spot. Twain kicks off her “Still the One” concert series on December 1st. Tweets --- Chris Young is most definitely a road warrior. He tweets, "Flight to L.A. today and then three non-stop weeks of shows. I'm pumped!" --- Good news for Joe Nichols fans! He tweets, "So thankful to be going into the studio tomorrow to begin recording new music with one of my all-time favorite producers -- Tony Brown." The special dog is being sold at 230 Fifth, but the restaurant needs 48 hours notice to put it together. Perhaps the only good thing to come out of this pricey hot dog is that all proceeds will be donated to City Harvest, a food bank Car Gets Washed – Inside And Out Workers at a New Jersey car wash said a woman hit the wrong pedal while exiting the business and plunged into a river on Sunday. John Goez, an employee at the Spotless Auto Laundry in Hackensack, said the elderly woman apparently hit the gas pedal instead of the brake when her wash was finished getting a good spit-n- shine and ended up in the Hackensack River. Goez and a customer jumped into the water and rescued the woman from her car. The woman was taken to the hospital as a precaution. Firefighters towed the car out of the river. OFFICER DON'S POLICE BLOTTER: Man Spots Own Stolen Bike Police in Boston said the person who had their $1,500 bicycle stolen spotted someone riding it the following morning. Investigators said the Trek 7500 bike was stolen Friday night from the Black Bay, and the victim confronted the man, identified as Joseph Joseph, 45, when he saw him riding the bicycle Saturday morning in the South End. Police arrived and the owner showed them the receipt from the purchase of his bike, which matched the serial number. Joseph said he bought the bike for $100 from a man who was selling it on the street. Joseph was charged with buying, receiving or concealing a stolen goods. Cop Gets $14,000 For Hairy Bagel A New Jersey policeman reached a $14,000 settlement with a deli and cook after the officer found body hairs in his breakfast sandwich, lawyers say. The settlement stems from a February 2010 incident in which Evesham police officer Jeremy Merck found body and pubic hair inside his turkey, egg and cheese bagel from Good Foods to Go. Short-order cook Ryan Burke, 27, later admitted to putting his own hair in the sandwich as revenge for a 2009 traffic stop. He pleaded guilty to charges of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and retaliation against a public official. He was sentenced to two years probation and 15 days in jail in January 2011. Merck filed a civil lawsuit against him and the deli in October. NFL ‘Ochocinco’ Is Chad Johnson Again Miami Dolphins wide receiver Chad Ochocinco said yesterday he has officially become Chad Johnson again, because his wife preferred a real last name. Johnson said he has switched back to his birth name after going by “Ochocinco” in honor of his number 85 for the last four years. “Ochocinco is still in me,” he says. “It’s just my middle name.” Penn State Fined $60 Million, Wins Vacated From ‘98-11 The NCAA slammed Penn State for the Jerry Sandusky sex abuse scandal yesterday with an unprecedented series of penalties, including a $60 million fine and the loss of all the school’s victories from 1998-2011, knocking Joe Paterno from his spot as major college football’s winningest coach. Other sanctions include a four-year ban on postseason games that will prevent Penn State from playing for the Big Ten title, the loss of 20 scholarships per year over four years and five years’ probation. The NCAA also said that any current or incoming football players are free to immediately transfer and compete at another school. Sandusky, a former Penn State defensive coordinator, was found guilty in June of sexually abusing young boys. An investigation commissioned by the school found that Paterno, who died in January, and several other top officials at Penn State stayed quiet for years about accusations against Sandusky. The NCAA said the $60 million is equivalent to the annual gross revenue of the football program. The money must be paid into an endowment for external programs preventing child sexual abuse or assisting victims and may not be used to fund such programs at Penn State. By vacating 112 Penn State victories over a 14-year period, the sanctions cost Paterno 111 wins. Former Florida State coach Bobby Bowden will now hold the top spot in the NCAA record book with 377. Paterno, who was fired days after Sandusky was charged, will be credited with 298 wins. Penn State agreed to not fight the sanctions. “Football will never again be placed ahead of educating, nurturing and protecting young people,” NCAA President Mark Emmert declared. Randy Jackson said last week on “The View” he would be back again as judge on Season 12 of “Idol.” There is no word on who the third judge might be. Mariah is reportedly getting paid $18 million with a one-year option to do “Idol,” “making her the highest paid judge on any music competition show,” an “Idol” insider told Us Weekly. Lopez pulled in about $12 million dollars per “Idol” season; Christina Aguilera negotiated a reported $10 million for the third season of “The Voice,” while Britney Spears will rake in an approximate $16 million for her stint on “The X Factor.” ‘American Idol’ Offers New Ways To Audition “American Idol” wants to make sure they have searched all of America for its season 12 talent. “American Idol Small Town Audition Bus Tour,” “Nominate An Idol” and online auditions were introduced yesterday as three new ways contestants can enter the competition. Meanwhile, the online audition gives hopefuls the opportunity to audition by submitting a video of them singing one of the songs from the approved list. One person is limited to submitting one video and it must be in a cappella. The online auditions will open on August 1st and close on August 14th. ‘Dark Knight’ Has $161 Million Opening Weekend The latest Batman film, “The Dark Knight Rises,” earned nearly $161 million at the North American box office when it opened this weekend. The weekly film earnings were reported yesterday instead of the usual Sunday out of respect for the victims of the Colorado movie theater massacre. Box Office Mojo said “Ice Age: Continental Drift” was No. 2 with $20 million, “The Amazing Spider-Man” was No. 3 with $11 million, “Ted” was No. 4 with $10 million and “Brave” was No. 5 with $6 million. “The Dark Knight Rises” had the biggest opening ever for a non-3D movie and the third-biggest opening of all time behind 3D offerings “The Avengers” with $207 million and “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2” with $169.2 million. Astronaut Sally Ride Dies Sally Ride, the first American woman to go into space, has died of pancreatic cancer at age 61. Ride, who was 32 when she launched aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger on June 18, 1983, was with NASA’s space program from 1978 until 1987. A physicist, Ride was among 8,000 people who answered an NASA newspaper advertisement seeking astronaut candidates. During her NASA tenure, she was instrumental in developing the space shuttle’s robotic arm, used to launch and retrieve satellites and vital to the famous repair effort on the Hubble Space Telescope. After leaving NASA, Ride worked at Stanford University, became a professor of physics at the University of California-San Diego and was director of the California Space Institute. Theater Suspect To Be Charged July 30th Formal charges against the man suspected of killing 12 people and wounding 58 others at an Aurora, Colorado, movieplex will be filed July 30th, the judge ruled. James Holmes, 24, with his hair dyed red and yellow, was also ordered not to have contact with any of the victims or victims’ families, and was appointed a public defender in his first court appearance since Friday’s shooting during the Century 16 Movie complex’s midnight screening Friday of “The Dark Knight Rises.” Judge William Sylvester said the suspect was jailed under a “no bond hold.” Holmes bought his 6,000-round ammunition supply legally and easily over the Internet, police said. The guns were purchased legally at Denver-area stores. Police said Holmes ordered 3,000 rounds of handgun ammunition, 3,000 rounds for an assault rifle and 350 shells for a 12-gauge shotgun almost as easily as a person orders a book from Amazon.com. He spent an estimated $3,000 at the online sites in the four months before the shooting. He also bought bulletproof vests and other tactical gear, and a high-capacity “drum magazine” ammunition storage and feeding device that could hold 100 rounds and could fire 50 or 60 rounds a minute, police said. Holmes, a University of Colorado Denver graduate student in neuroscience with a clean criminal record, bought the ammunition without police awareness because sellers generally aren’t required to report sales to law enforcement officials. Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart won't be walking down the aisle any time soon. In an interview with BlackBook magazine, Rob shoots down rumors that he's marrying his girlfriend of three years. But he reveals that talk of the nuptials were so strong that his own mother believed it. He says, "There was a magazine, with these pictures, saying I was getting married. No one ever knows what is true or what isn't. Even my own mum called to ask me if it was true. It's not. At least, not yet." The final Twilight movie -- starring Rob and Kristen as a married vampire couple -- hits theaters in November. Cruise Kid World’s Most Stylish Suri Cruise has been named the world’s most stylish child. The six-year-old daughter of Tom Cruise and his estranged wife Katie Holmes topped a poll by family-gifting site twistedtwee.co.uk for her stunning wardrobe. Suri, whose wardrobe is rumored to be worth $2 million, beat Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s daughter, Blue Ivy, into second place while Will and Jada Smith’s girl, Willow, came in third. Harlow Madden, daughter of Nicole Richie and Joel Madden, was fourth, followed by David and Victoria Beckham’s first girl, Harper Seven. Mario Lopez Joins Voice Cast Of ‘Chica Show’ Mario Lopez is lending his voice to an animated character on “The Chica Show,” the preschool television channel Sprout announced. A mix of live action and animation, the show is expected to premiere later this year. It stars puppet Chica the Chicken, the popular host from Sprout’s “The Sunny Side Up Show.” Lopez will play Stitches, a “lovable rag doll who springs to life via animation as a warm, vibrant and fun- loving boy.” Kirstie Alley In Weight Loss Lawsuit Kirstie Alley is being sued for allegedly lying about how she lost a ton of weight. The actress has been promoting Organic Liaison, claiming it was that product that helped her lose 100 pounds. But a California woman, Marina Abramyan, has filed a lawsuit alleging Kirstie actually lost the weight through her rigorous training on “Dancing With The Stars.” The plaintiff used the product but was apparently dissatisfied and wants Kirstie to reveal the truth claiming the 61-year-old actress was actually on an extremely low calorie diet and doing lots of exercise. Abramyan says the product just contains a lot of calcium and fiber which is not a proven weight-loss product. Abramyan wants unspecified damages from Alley. EXTRAS: Oyster Bay Harbor Shellfish Warning Issued U.S. officials say consumers should not eat shellfish identified as harvested in Oyster Bay Harbor, New York, June 1st and after. The FDA said consumers possessing shellfish for which the harvest area is not known should inquire of the retailer, restaurant or other facility about the source of shellfish. “If the shellfish was already consumed and no one became ill, no action is needed,” the FDA said. “However, if you develop a diarrheal illness within a week after consuming raw or undercooked shellfish, see your health care provider and inform the provider about this exposure.” The New York state Department of Environmental Conservation prohibited the harvesting of shellfish from Oyster Bay Harbor in Nassau County on Long Island and advised establishments and consumers not to use shellfish from the harvest area. Many See E-Cigarettes As Less Harmful Current U.S. smokers are more likely to use e-cigarettes – formally known as Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems – than non-smokers, researchers say. Researchers at the Schroeder Institute at the American Legacy Foundation found 40.2% of U.S. adults have heard of e-cigarettes – drug-delivery devices that allow smokers to inhale vaporized nicotine in a cigarette-like fashion – and more than 70% said they were less harmful than regular cigarettes. Current smokers were several times more likely to have tried an e-cigarette than non-smokers, but the researchers said they were not sure why. Since e-cigarettes dispense nicotine, a highly addictive substance, and as yet are unregulated, they raise serious concerns for public health, Legacy officials said. “Given the poor quality control of these products, consumers are taking unknown risks by using e-cigarettes, with little proven new benefits,” executive director David Abrams said. U.S. Pledges More Funds To Fight HIV/AIDS The United States is donating $80 million in new funding to help poor countries boost their efforts to prevent HIV infection in babies born to mothers with the virus that causes AIDS. The new money will help get life-saving HIV drugs to women who currently don’t receive them, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton told the International AIDS Conference yesterday. Clinton also told the conference that the U.S. will invest millions more to identify the best ways to protect the highest-risk populations – gay and bisexual men, sex workers and injection drug users – in countries hard hit by HIV. Leading U.S. AIDS researcher Dr. Anthony Fauci said science has provided the tools needed to greatly reduce the number of new HIV infections, but countries need to put these tools in place. Those tools include better treatment of HIV-infected people, so that they’re less likely to infect others. Bringing Your Dog to Work Is Good for You According to study by Virginia Commonwealth University's School of Business, employees who bring their dog to work are less stressed during the day. In fact, having a dog in the office improves everyone's mood at work. "We think dogs' presence in the workplace may reduce stress for their owners, increase job satisfaction even for those without pets, and it may increase perceptions of organizational support," says Professor Randolph Barker. "It's a low-cost wellness intervention, or benefit, that's available readily to any organization." What Parents Worry About Most A YMCA Healthy Kids Day survey found that almost 70% of parents report not having money for “extras” for their kids; 15% report actually falling behind on finances. When asked what parents lose sleep worrying about most when it comes to their kids, respondents said: 1. Financial security 30% 2. Health 21% 4. Values 18% 5. Friendships 11% Women Lazier Than Men?! Women may have higher IQs and longer lives than men, but a new study shows that they are also lazier. Lancet published a paper examining which countries have the most and least active citizens. The findings showed that 34% of women in 122 countries are inactive, as opposed to 28% of men. Worldwide, 31.1% of adults are physically inactive, defined as less than 30 minutes of moderate activity 5 days a week or 20 minutes of vigorous activity three times a week. The scale of physical activity varies greatly from country to country. For example, only 4.7% of Bangladeshi citizens are rated as inactive, while Malta has the highest rate of inactivity – 72%. In the United States, 47% of women are inactive vs. only 33.5% of men. Drivers Plan To Drive Their Cars Into The Ground The days of buying a new car every three years are gone, largely in part because of difficult economic conditions. And many drivers say they’ll drive their car into the ground as long as the economy continues to suffer. Three out of four motorists responding to a survey from AutoMD.com said buying a vehicle every two to three years no longer makes sense, and more than 40% of people said they plan to keep their car “until it dies.” About 60% of respondents said their primary vehicle has more than 100,000 miles on it. Two in three said they’ll drive their vehicle for more than 150,000 miles, or until it no longer runs. When asked why they plan to keep their vehicles for more than 100,000 miles, 47% of respondents cited the economy and 44% said it’s because they are sticklers about repairs and maintenance. Of those who are more likely to keep a car longer, more than half said even an improving economy isn’t incentive enough to buy a new ride. Bank Of America Customers Have Fewer ATMS To Use If you’re a Bank of America customer and you sensed that the number of BofA ATMs out there has shrunk in recent months, you’re not hallucinating. The company says it decided to pull 1,536 – nearly 1-in-10 – of its ATMs out of use in an effort to cut costs. The bank, which has been hit hard by the huge lawsuits tied to the oodles of bad loans made by Countrywide, has been trying to trim spending wherever possible. That means that when it came time to renew its ATM placement contracts with Simon Property Group, the nation’s largest shopping mall operator, and the Valero chain of gas stations, BofA said no to both. Analysts believe that gas station and mall ATMs were targeted because the bank has to pay a premium to pay for its floor space, and these ATMs are often only as cash disbursal machines, as opposed to in-bank ATMs that offer a wider range of services to actual BofA customers. One consultant tells Bloomberg that banks pay an average total of $1,700 per month to have an ATM on someone else’s property. That’s $600 more than it costs to run an ATM inside a bank.
