Rules and Regulations for 2012 Competitive Cheer Tryouts (READ THOROUGHLY)

1. All athletic fees from previous year must be paid in full in order to tryout.
2. You must be eligible under the provisions of the South Carolina High School League and
Richland School District Two. These guidelines state that a student must have a passing
average (2.0) to be eligible for participation in athletics.
3. You will attend all tryout practices. If you must be at another BHS athletic event, you
will need to find out what was covered at tryouts and learn this on your own time.
PLEASE SEE COACH YOUNG IF THIS APPLIES TO YOU.
4. You must dress out for all tryout practices in shorts (no nylon), t-shirts, adequate support
tennis shoes (no Keds, platforms, or casual tennis shoes) and white socks. Five points per
day will be deducted from your score if you fail to dress appropriately for the scheduled
    practices.
5. Be on time for each tryout practice. (4:00-7:00) Points will be deducted from your score
    each time you are late.
6. FINAL EVALUATION - The dress for final evaluation will consist of dark shorts
(black or navy), a white tank or t-shirt (no writing), sports bra, white socks, and good
support tennis shoes. You may also wear a ribbon of your choice, decorated to show your
personality. Be sure your ribbon is secured with no inappropriate designs that will shed
    onto the mat.
7. Hair will need to be secured away from your face in a neat ponytail each day. If you
have short hair that does not touch your shoulder, you may wear it half up.
8. You must be attentive at all times. Excessive talking during demonstrations and practice
    will not be permitted.
9. No jewelry will be worn during tryouts. This is considered a safety violation in
    cheerleading.
10. Fingernails will need to be cut. Absolutely no acrylics are permitted. These offenses will
prevent you from participating at tryout practices.
11. Absolutely no gum, five points will be deducted from your score if you are chewing gum.
12. Bring a small water bottle and fill it up prior to beginning tryout practice.

Spring 2012 Participant Expectations and Judging Criteria

Participant Expectations and Requirements
 All participants must specify on the day before final evaluations their desired stunting
       position to be evaluated on.
 Participants may only choose 1 of the 3 stunting positions for their evaluation and
therefore are encouraged to select their strongest position.
 Participants must specify on the day before final evaluations (Thursday, April 19)
whether they want to be considered for JV, Varsity or both Cheer Squads and if they
want to be considered for, basketball and/or football/competitive squads. All basketball
cheer squads will be selected based on ability and the skills required for that particular
squad. JV basketball cheerleader prospects must possess the traditional cheer skills
necessary to cheer at basketball games. Varsity basketball cheerleader prospects will
need to possess strong dance skills as well as strong cheer skills. All 9th-12th grade
prospects for basketball are eligible to cheer for either squad. All squads will be chosen
based on skill level not grade level.
 Final Decisions for squad placement are based on your squad and stunting position
specifications, individual squad needs, your skills, and your character evaluation chart.
 If you make a competitive squad, your stunting position could change based on your
ability and the need of the squad, therefore it is not guaranteed the position you are
evaluated on during tryouts will be the same position you hold on the team.

Coaches’ Evaluation Criteria
All scores for each participant will focus on cheer skills and character. 50 points of your score
will be derived from your skills and 50 points will be based on your character scores. The
maximum points you can receive is 100. The form and charts below are what the coaches will
use to evaluate you on the final days of tryouts.

Placement on a squad is contingent upon your performance in tryouts and the squad(s) for
which you desire to be considered. For example, if you only indicate a desire to be
considered for varsity but don’t score high enough to make varsity but your score is high
enough for JV, you will not make either squad because you only specified varsity as your
desired squad.

                 Blythewood Cheerleading Parent/Student Permission Form

_______________________________________ has my permission to try out for
competitive cheerleading at Blythewood High School. I recognize that cheerleading is a
strenuous activity. In that regard, I know of no pre-existing condition, injury, or illness, etc.
which would limit my child’s participation at tryouts. I give permission for my child to
participate in stunting, tumbling and all other cheerleading activities for tryouts. I have read
the tryout packet and will assist in helping to see that cheerleading rules are upheld both
during tryouts and if my child should make the squad. I will also see that he/she gets a
physical dated after April 1, 2012, attends all summer camps, and all practice sessions or
games unless excused by the coach in advance. I have read and understand the costs I will
acquire if my child is selected to be a cheerleader at Blythewood high school and I accept the
responsibility of these costs if my child is chosen. I have read and understood all of the
requirements for my child to be considered for competitive, football and/or basketball
cheerleading at Blythewood High School and understand the decisions of the coaches are
   final.

April 16 to begin practices. Tryouts will be held from 4:00-7:00pm each day (Monday-Friday).
Final evaluations will be held on Friday, April 20, 2012. I also understand that if I make any of
the cheer squads at Blythewood High School, I am expected to uphold the standards specified by
the coach. I agree to uphold the specified standards and understand that if I do not I can be
dismissed from the cheerleading program.
