					Single Replacement Reactions
In a single replacement reaction, one element replaces another element in a compound.

For a metal: X+ + Y+Z- X+Z- + Y+

Single replacement reactions only occur if the “replacing” element is strong enough to push out
the other element. Before you can write the products for any single displacement equation, you
must check the Activity Series to see if the reaction is possible.

Au + LiCl Check Activity Series (In Text p 333)
No reaction because Li > Au on the Activity Series

Li(s) + NaCl(aq)  LiCl(aq) + Na(s) Reaction occurs because Li > Na on the Activity Series
                        Activity Series Chart
Elements higher on the chart can replace elements below it.
Elements lower on the chart cannot replace elements higher on the chart.
