							Integrating the Internet in
       Classrooms
In what ways do you use the
        Internet in your life?
• Brainstorm!
                   Internet
• Internet
  – Network of websites and information open to
    the general public
  – People can access it from any device
     • Computer, cell phones, PDAs, iPods??
• Intranet
                    Internet
• Internet
• Intranet
  – Network of websites and information located
    within a school
  – You must be in the school to be able to
access it or have password access
     • An example would be your H drive
The Internet brings up copyright
             issues
• Instructional Purposes
    1. you are in a place dedicated to instruction and
the material will stay there (rather than being
         distributed to a wider audience);
-in class use only; website posting???
    2. you are using a legitimate copy as your source;
-you must have access to the original copy
    3. the service or resource you are using is not
available for sale for educational use.
-not able to make a profit off the materials
                       Internet
• Taking things off the Web and using them in projects is
OK, but posting them back online is not.
• You might say it's like the difference between cutting
things out of the newspaper and making copies of the
  paper to resell.
• Posting on a protected Intranet, however, is permissible
since it's viewed as remaining inside the classroom
  community.
• It is generally believed that "implied public access"
permits Web site builders to include links to other sites
  without requesting permission.
• Netiquette dictates removing such links, however, if the
site being pointed to so requests.
                   True/False
You can download pictures from the Internet to use
 on worksheets for your class.

You find a copy of a book on the Internet. You are allowed to
make copies of the book to use with your class.

Don, a biology teacher, was developing a
PowerPoint presentation for his class. He found a
good 30-second video clip of mitosis on a video the
school had purchased. He digitized the clip,
inserted it into the presentation, and showed it in
class. Was this a violation of copyright law?
