May 6, 2008 GRCC IN THE NEWS Grand Rapids Press, May 2, 2008 TRIO helps Grand Rapids Community College students go places “Just getting to college had its obstacles: One student spoke little English, the other two had little money. But, after two years at Grand Rapids Community College, Chelsie Heard, Kayla Holtz and Leydi Roa-Torres are graduating tonight, the first in their families to earn a college diploma. And the trio who let nothing stand in their way have another honor ahead of them. They are among only 20 college students nationwide to earn a scholarship to a GRCC GET RUNNING CHARITY CLASSIC TEAM BIO: leadership training program in June at the MTEC Running For The North Kent Service Center University of Liverpool in England…” The Tassell M-TEC Running Team includes faculty and staff that have come together to have fun and raise money for the North Kent Service Center, a faith-based, non-profit organization that assist families in Northern Kent County with food, clothes and other services to help them cope with a crisis. The Salem Avery Children of Alcoholics Scholarship was created in 2008 and is designed to award $250 scholarships each year.
